If the 60 vote rule was not in effect it would have passed. The bill received 54 votes.
Dick Durbin had some GREAT quotes in his speech before the vote. We pay .44 on transactions. The rest of the worlds average is .12 or .13. The charge in Canada? ZERO.
One thing I didnt like was Dick Durbin said there was an excemption for small banks (less than 10 billion) to continure charging higher rates. If its wrong to rob merchants, then its wrong and no one should be doing it.
Is Carper retiring next year? Any wish list for a replacement?
Carper is running for re-election in 2012. Markell and Beau have their eyes on the seat for 2018. So we’ll get either a closet Republican or an awkward, incompetent daddy’s boy. Hopefully someone else emerges by then.

have speculated that he’s got eyes on Iowa for 2012, but Markell winning the nomination is unlikely. He’s too young to hang it up. That leaves a
cabinet position (if The Dems retain the White House), private sector, or the Senate. The House is likely below him, though that position might open up in 2016 as well.

Markell is not going to make a serious run for the White House. You guys are majorly delusional. He might run to get some national exposure and land on someone’s short list for VP, sure. But any Markell for President campaign is going to fall way flat.
Markell has no gimmick, no personal story, no crusade, no single national issue he can ride into D.C. We’re seeing right now in the Romney campaign how well a business-background candidate can do. All Markell’s been so far is the semi-competent governor who replaced an incompetent one. He’s gotten kudos basically because he’s the anti-Minner and can make the trains run on time. Call him the Mike Dukakis of the ’00s.
Remember that the Democratic field in 2016 is going to be wide open, and there are a lot stronger contenders out there than a corporate-friendly policy wonk with a horrible combover. And his chances for the Naval Observatory aren’t much, either. Do you really think any Democratic nominee is going to pick ANOTHER guy from Delaware for second place on the ticket? Come ON.
The White House will flip to the GOP in 2016. That’s almost a guarantee. That’s been the American public’s approach since 1992. Two terms, then flip. The last VP to follow his president into the White House was George H.W. Bush – and we all know how that ended up. Whether people just want a “change,” whether it’s incumbent exhaustion, whether it’s “Hey, let’s let these other guys try something” – the presidency will flip.
The GOP nominee in 2016 will be either Bachmann or Rubio – probably Rubio – with Pawlenty or Huntsman as a running mate for what passes for gravitas. The Democrats will pick … oh, hell, who knows? Sherrod Brown or Martin O’Malley top my list.
