Betty Ford Has Died

Filed in National by on July 8, 2011

Former First Lady Betty Ford has died.

She was a gracious First Lady, a change from her predecessor, and actually brought back some joy to the White House. I remember meeting her in 1978 at the Colorado Republican State Convention (I was covering it for my college newspaper). She was very warm and friendly.

May she rest in peace.

  1. I believe she was the first First Lady to acknowledge mental health and she’s quite famous for helping with alcoholism. RIP Mrs. Ford.

  2. MJ says:

She was also very public about her breast cancer surgery.

  3. Venus says:

Beyond mental health. It was the quiet housewife addictions of alcoholism, and Valium. She was the First Lady of Rehab. She brought detox out of state hospitals, and seedy county jails, facilitating the medical and behavioral disciplines together for treatment.

  4. We definitely owe Betty Ford a debt of gratitude.

    We do.

She always seemed so much more interesting than her husband, which may sound mean, but when you heard her speak she seemed down to earth and engaged in the topic. I remember her saying that having babies is a blessing, not a duty for women and her strong advocacy for the Equal Rights Amendment.

She’d never be allowed to speak for Republicans now. RIP, Mrs. Ford.
