That’s What She Said

Filed in National by on April 3, 2012

The First Lady or a potential First Lady does not win or lose elections except maybe in France. Yesterday morning, Politico did one of its standard fluff piece on Ann Romney with the headline, “Ann Romney is the Romney Democrats fear most“. Politico might have a point, given that Mitt Romney has the personality of a slice of Wonder Bread.

Mitt Romney’s stilted personality, coupled with voter skepticism about his core beliefs, has proved to be a serious liability. Polls have shown that the more people get to know the former Massachusetts governor, the less they like him — the opposite dynamic of President Barack Obama. Even when Obama’s job approval numbers decline, people still say they like him personally.

“With her cozy pullover sweaters and youthful, flowing blond hair” (direct quote from the Politico fluff piece), Romney was being interviewed later yesterday morning on WBAL. When asked about her husband’s stiffness, Ann Romney replied:

“Well, you know, I guess we better unzip him and let the real Mitt Romney out.”

So, Ann Romney goes from a person who Democrats need to fear in the morning to a late night joke by lunch time. But remember what I said at the beginning of the post, “The First Lady or a potential First Lady does not win or lose elections except maybe in France.” Either you like a candidate or not. How you feel about their better half, does not swing your vote, it only reinforces your feelings regarding the candidate.

    stiffness.. tee hee.

All one can say is, “she gets it.”

  3. pandora says:

    Oh my. That’s too funny.

  4. Delaware Dem says:

I didn’t realize I am supposed to fear Stepfords.

  5. auntie dem says:

    Oh my indeed.

  6. Socialistic ben says:

ugh. Im sorry, i know women’s physical appearance is a base subject….. but the face lifted unnatural blonde perma-smile Suzie Hommaker look is so damn unattractive! I know republican men love it… they look like Barbie dolls… god forbid a woman ages EVER… you said it DD… Stepford is a real place.. and apparently GOP candidates for president go there to find a mate.

  7. Que Pasa says:

Is it ok to make fun of the current First Lady’s appearance?

  8. Jason330 says:

Why would anyone make fun of the awesome looking and classy first lady? You make no sense Senora.

  9. Delaware Dem says:

I would say there is nothing to make fun of, since Mrs. Obama is a stunningly beautiful woman who is in better shape than most of the men commenting on this blog, myself included. Also too, she is pretty damn intelligent.

    But go right ahead.

  10. Socialistic ben says:

id say she has a very powerful looking face. She is not someone with “soft” features. That is attractive to me because im not intimidated by powerful women…. now, to LOLmen (still tryin with that one) like Rush, or whoever… they can find something to try and mock in that. Cindy McCain, Callista Gingrich, Canna Romney….. they all might as well be triplets of the children of the corn. No particularly unique looking, certainly not UGLY, but essentially what you would expect the wife of a white conservative man to look like.

  11. Que Pasa says:

So you enjoy hideously mismatched, perpetually inappropriate ensembles plastered on a Hippo-assed Wookie? Whatever floats your boat, Jay-boy.

  12. pandora says:

Gentlemen, please. Ben, go to your room. You know better.

    Drop the looks crap, gentlemen.

  13. Von Cracker says:

What’s more amazing than the wishful thinking that Ann Romney is someone to be concerned about is reading the racist comments on that article. But from what I understand, that’s par for the course over there.

The self-loathing on that site is worse than a opus dei flog-a-thon.

  14. Jason330 says:

I think Senora Pasa is trying to insult someone, but I have no idea what she is talking about.

  15. Socialistic ben says:

but but… i used it to insult conservative men! sigh. im too terrible at the internet to find instances where discussions of men’s “HE’S SO FAT” looks were discussed. so ima just gonna drop it. Michelle Obama is the MOST INTELLIGENT first lady ever (that wont later run for office….i think she’s too classy)

  16. Que Pasa says:

    How so, SB? How so?

Did you read her thesis or something?

  17. Jason330 says:

Senora is loco in the cabeza if she thinks anyone is going to click on that link.

  18. Socialistic ben says:

well, im also a stupid reactionary without personal restraint who is easily dragged into the gutter.. just like QP!! . so i clicked on it. it’s an unflattering picture of Mrs Obama (one of the few)…. ya know when someone snaps a picture at the wrong part of a smile? She’s also standing next to a tiny little (probably Brittish) man, and since it is illegal for women to be taller or physically advantageous to men in ANY WAY in Conservaland, QP is probably upset about that too.

  19. pandora says:

It’s really just easier not to go down the looks path. 😉

  20. V says:

I HATE to side with QP but that shirt is REALLY ugly. However one of the cool things about Michelle is that she plays with current fashion (and mostly American designers) more than any other recent first lady. Most of the time she looks stunning, but she doesn’t always get it right (you know, like everybody).

One of my fav fashion blogs checks in on her from time to time. Here’s a more balanced account.

If i preferred the easy path, i wouldn’t identify myself as a socialist, talk politics all day, and try to learn how to play mandolin.

  22. V says:

also, i sorta wanna see more of Anne because she seems funny. But also not because im worried that will sway some women into forgetting all the awful things her husband stands for.

sort of like that revulsion you felt when you found out Huckabee’s politics after finding him charming and likeable and haha chuck norris.

  23. Que Pasa says:

SB, unless she changes with Superman-like speed, that picture you saw wasn’t a mere unflattering moment caught by the cameras. It was an offical event where she or one of her bird-brained handlers decided to throw an entire party store’s worth of doilies over her head and called it an outfit. Rather embarassing as the wife of the offical representative of our country, don’t ya think? ‘Ahem, who brought the uncouth trailer trash?’

Regardless, I think in her efforts to try to seem hip (and less hippy), she goes overboard due to a lack of understanding in what constitutes timeless design and flattering composition. Nothing wrong with that, as most English/Arts degreed lawyers I know have a tough time with it too. Let’s just not go crazy and say she’s “stunning”, unless the pain searing your eyeballs is from the obnoxious kalaidescope of mismatched colors emanating from around her boob belt.

  24. Liberal Elite says:

Wow. I never realized QP was so metrosexual.

It just looks like an light hearted outfit to me.

  25. Dana Garrett says:

I really don’t care how a first spouse looks. But I do object when a first spouse or potential first spouse is fronted to distract us from the incompetence of the President or presidential candidate. Like when Nancy Regan would whisper to Ronnie what to say when asked a question by the press or when Laura Bush was trotted out when W’s poll numbers plunged into the low 30s. You’d think that the GOP would be friendlier to women given how they rely on them to salvage their GOP presidents. Now it appears the same script is being played with the Romneys. That’s an indication that Mitt is a political incompetent.
