Presidential Debate Question

Filed in National by on September 6, 2012

How in the world is Mitt Romney going to handle the Presidential debates?  He has run his entire campaign on avoiding detailed policy discussions, so how does this translate into a debate?  Will he simply say, “I love freedom” over and over again?

Health Care, Afghanistan, Taxes, Medicare/Medicaid, Abortion, Budget Cuts, Unions, the Economy, Foreign Policy, etc. – all these topics, and many, many more, will be on the table.  How does Mitt Romney respond to these issues, or is there a way he can avoid them and continue to say nothing?

“I’ll give everyone who votes for me five hundred bucks. No strings, just vote for me and you get the cash. You know I have the money.”

  2. puck says:

Not a bad idea. After he signs the GOP economic plan, all the $500 payouts would be back in Mitt’s pocket before the summer.

When the President gets finished making excuses ,and blaming Bush, Mitt just looks over at him and asks him a simple question. “Mr President what did you mean when you said , “Under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket,” . “Coal-powered plants, you know, natural gas, you name it, whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.”

Then he can ask the President what he was thinking when the First Lady enjoyed a five star hotel vacation in Spain with forty of her friends during the worst recession in our lifetime. “What kind of message does that send to your subjects your majesty, I mean Mr. President?” “Wasn’t the First Lady’s speech all about “feeling the pain?””

It is amazing how great and confident I feel after reading FBH’s comment.

    *sigh* I don’t know why I’m bothering…

“The White House has said that the Obamas paid their own way for the Spain trip, during which the first lady, along with daughter Sasha, traveled around the country and visited with the royal family. Officials told The New York Times in August 2010 that two friends and four of their daughters, along with two aides and two advance staff members, went on the trip. The friends paid for their own rooms, food and transportation, the officials said.

The Air Force denied a request by Judicial Watch to provide the exact number of civilians who took the trip.

Even though the Obamas picked up some of the immediate costs, the government, which determines how much protection the first lady needs, spent a considerable sum on the trip, according to the conservative watchdog’s report. The total cost of the flights was about $199,300, and the Secret Service spent about $254,500 on the vacation.

I’m sure that when Republican Presidents and first ladies travel abroad it doesn’t cost any money to protect them. I also assume they stay in super 8’s and not large hotels determined by the secret service as being the best to optimize safety and their operations.

“Threadbare” gives Romney supporters arguments too much credit by suggesting that they contain thread.

Indeed, P. I was going to ask if anyone knew how to contact Rmoney so we could send him this amazing bit of debate advice, but then I remembered that Rmoney probably has *his people* listening in to Rush Limbaugh everyday so they probably already got this particular memo.

I heard this amazing articleon NPR (and for the LIFE of me I can’t find it) about how impossible it is financially to be a middle class president. The Obamas obviously aren’t paupers but came in with considerably less than other presidents. The Obamas have to rent a large house (with their own money btw) when they go to Hawaii to work with the secret service’s needs. Meanwhile since the Bush’s were already millionaires they built the Crawford ranch during the campaign in anticipation of using it as a retreat during the presidency. there was a whole breakdown of when they personally pay for stuff. it was fascinating.

shame Obama didn’t think of building a mansion ranch.

  9. pandora says:

I also love the way FBH thinks Romney will be asking the questions.

  10. Dave says:

Every so often someone gripes about Presidents, their families and their vacations. Bush spent more time in Crawford, away from the White House, than any modern President. But so what? The President’s wife went on vacation, again so what? Congress legislated that the First Lady and family receive protection. Neither the President or his wife have any control over how they are protected except as it affects their privacy. When the Secret Service needs the President to duck, they don’t ask him, they knock him down if necessary. The Secret Service is responsible for protection and whatever they determine is necessary to execute that responsibility is done. Presidents are always on duty, whether they are in Crawford, Bermuda, Camp David or whereever. The cost is the price the nation pays to protect its Chief Executive and Commander In Chief.

  11. Fightingbluehen says:

I love the way pandora thinks Romney won’t be asking questions. Candidates do it all the time.
The optics of her lavish Spain vacation during a severe recession will not help Obama.

  12. pandora says:

You do realize that you and Tea Partiers are the ONLY people talking about the Spain trip, right?

Is this how you see this playing out? The moderator asks Romney a question on his plan for improving the economy and Romney asks Obama about his wife’s trip to Spain? Hey, given Romney’s political instincts this very well may be his strategy.

And Romney can ask all the questions he wants (that should go over well), but he had better start answering some. This has been one of the worst run campaigns I’ve ever seen. Sheesh, it’s September and Romney still hasn’t been able to define himself.

  13. Dominique says:

What’s Obama’s plan? Keep on keepin’ on! I’m gonna fix it…no, seriously, I really mean it this time!

I have a sneaky suspicion we’re going to get a lot of talking points from both of them. The only hope we have of a real debate will be Biden/Ryan because Biden can’t stay on script and Ryan doesn’t have to rely on talking points because he actually understands the financial mess we’re in. It’ll be fun to watch Biden deliver (yet another) folksy story about something his father told him when he was a kid growing up in Scranton, then shit the bed with an inappropriate comment of some sort. I like to imagine Obama pacing around backstage holding his stomach during the entire debate.

DVR Alert: SNL’s season premiere is scheduled for the 15th. Scranton Joe is sure to give them plenty of fodder.

  14. jason330 says:

FBH, “lavish Spain vacation” lol. I really doubt Romney is going to want to take on Obama on this turf.

Dom, The notion that Ryan understands the mess created by Bush has been dead for a few weeks now. Once named as the running mate, his reputation for being smart crumbled when exposed to daylight.

  15. SussexAnon says:

And the Republicans plan is to go back to doing what they did to ruin the economy. Except only faster.

Whether you wish to admit it or not, President Obama fixed the falling economy. And much that he did was predicted to fail by Romney/Ryan.

Osama Bin Ladin is dead. General Motors is alive. Both of which, republicans didn’t seem all that interested in when they were at the wheel.

I am sure SNL has their work cut out for them trying to improve on the SNL skit that was Clint Eastwood.

  16. Davy says:

Some people’s preoccupation with the Obamas’ vacations is stupid. It’s not an issue. At least one deserving discussion.

And Ryan is (at least) as intelligent as his opponents, the President and Vice-President. I’m sorry his views differ from your views, though.

More energy is spent on the Obamas’ vacations and nicknames like Rmoney than the real issues. It’s sad.

@SussexAnon: GM is hurting this year. Profits are (way) down, and inventory is piling up. GM: Success in 2011. Gloom in 2012.

  17. X Stryker says:

Ryan understands the mess we’re in because he created it. And he doesn’t need talking points because literally everything he says is a lie. Having talking points would only serve to limit the scope of his bald faced dead eyed lying.
