Laurel parents support teacher’s demands for a four-year contract

In spite of a well financed campaign to make teachers out to be parasites on society, Laurel parents support their teachers.

LAUREL, Del. – A standing ovation for Nicole Dickerson, who took the podium to fight for teachers of the Laurel School District Wednesday evening. With two of her children attending Laurel schools, she’s begging the Board of Education to honor the requests teachers have made in contract negotiations.

“I’m sick of them losing all of their resources, and we’re cutting programs. And all of this does directly affect our children,” she said.

A new four-year contract was supposed to be finalized eight months ago, but after nine bargaining sessions and three sessions with a state-appointed mediator, the School District and the Laurel Education Association still won’t budge on issues including salary increases, teacher prep time and hours of instruction.

Do not forget Governor Markell as well. He opposed a raise for state public employees last session and forced a 7% pay cut for a Longshoreman local at the Port of Wilmington. Meanwhile, Race to the Top multi-million dollar contracts for Common Core – Corporate Thinking Tanks (testing) and casino machine vendor subsidies in the millions were approved. The teachers union is asleep at the wheel-time to wake up and organize.
