Madison and Christy Sheats are not outliers

Filed in National by on June 28, 2016

If there is a gun in your house, you are much more likely to be shot and killed by a family member brandishing it than by an intruder.

+ In the U.S., the proportion of murder victims who knew their assailants to victims killed by strangers is about 3-to-1. (Source: U.S. Department of Justice.)

Sensible Gun Owner and 2nd Amendment Enthusiast, Christy Sheats, in March:

“It would be horribly tragic if my ability to protect myself or my family were to be taken away, but that’s exactly what Democrats are determined to do by banning semiautomatic weapons.”

Sensible Gun Owner and 2nd Amendment Enthusiast, Christy Sheats, in June:

According to investigators, Christy Sheats had pulled her daughters and husband, Jason, together for a family meeting.

During the meeting, investigators say Christy Sheats held up a gun and shot both girls.

Jason and both daughters managed to run outside through the front door. Madison collapsed and died. Jason ran to the end of the cul-de-sac.

Taylor ran to the street and investigators say Christy followed, shooting Taylor again. Witnesses say Christy went back into the home to reload and then shot Taylor one more time. Tayor was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she died.

“In the U.S., the proportion of murder victims who knew their assailants to victims killed by strangers is about 3-to-1.”

Add in the 60% of guns deaths by suicides, and that becomes about 10-1.

Looks like she did it just to punish her husband. Seems like anger is stronger than love.

And then there’s this crazy train bullshit:
    America’s Martyr: NO Race Mixing

Interesting how Thou Shalt Not Kill gets to be Well, It’s OK if there Are Negros.

Is that Jennifer Mayers for real, or is it satire like Jesus’s General or Betty Bowers? I read a few of her other posts and didn’t know if I was supposed to laugh.

  5. Jason330 says:

You feel crappy because you know that taking firearms away from the clearly homicidal/suicidal is the same as TYRANNY!!

  6. puck says:

Because the tree of Liberty must be watered with the blood of innocents. Or something like that.

  7. Brian says:

Let’s remove the gun from the situation. She would have found another, equally instantaneous, way to murder her daughters without a gun, right? Kitchen knife? Blunt object? Because we know that argument is being had right now. That it wasn’t the gun that killed those two girls, it was the person. The gun was as innocent as the girls.

  8. jason330 says:

Are you kidding? Obviously, the gun made the attack much more lethal. Just as it makes all of the attacks in America much more lethal than similar attacks by similarly crazy people in countries that don;t allow crazy people to have guns.

  9. Brian says:

No I’m not kidding. *I’m* not arguing it. But I can guarantee that the argument is being made in certain circles. You’ve seen it before. “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” While technically correct, it should be followed with “But guns enable people to kill people faster.”

Looking at that calls for service sheet, I just can’t even wrap my head around why no one in that household thought “maybe since we have history of suicide attempts, we should get rid of the firearms.” Makes me sad, and angry, and dumbfounded.

  10. jason330 says:

Yep. In a sane country Sheats wouldn’t have been allowed within 100 meters of a gun. She also probably would have revived some metal health services.

  11. Dave says:

I’m pretty sanguine about the entire gun situation. In keeping with my pragmatic outlook, I have determined that the probability of meaningful discussion and action on our gun culture is rather fruitless.

Consequently, I have become dependent upon Mother Nature’s assistance in managing that culture to the extent that she is able. If the gun nuts manage to off themselves early enough they will not be able to reproduce thereby reducing the population who are members of that culture to manageable proportions.

Of course reliance on Mother Nature is very slow and long term process. So, I would advocate for assistance by employing eugenics to accelerate the process. While such measures would be draconian, if we make having children conditional depending on whether there are guns in the house, then the nuts would have to choose. Many would choose guns over children, thereby reducing the reproductive rate.

I don’t celebrate the loss of life and I know it sounds crass, but more the more they kill themselves and their families, the less there are of them. Stupidity has both genetic and environmental components.
