Song of the Day – English, 80’s, political, & gay week

Filed in National by on September 29, 2018

The songs I come back to are mostly English/80’s/political/frequently gay. We’ll start today with perhaps the most upbeat and danceable protest song ever – Free Nelson Mandela by the Specials AKA (1984)

I also love the anthematic and very Peter Gabriel “Biko” by Peter Gabriel. (1980)

*El Som and Alby, I hope you guys are okay with me just jumping in on this.

What do you mean by “gay”? The songs you like are gay? How so? They fit a stereotype you are enforcing here? Why would you say that?

This seems weird to me, and I feel vaguely offended as a homosexual man. FYI, I like bands like Judas Priest and Dio, not Madonna or whatever counts to you as “gay songs”.

    • Alby says:

Or is it songs by gay artists? Because I wouldn’t mind hearing some Hüsker Dü.

    • jason330 says:

By gay I mean gay. Like Jimmy Somerville gay. How old of a homosexual man are you, if I may ask.

        • Jason330 says:

Get ready to hear some real gay music whipper snappers

          • Andrew says:

No thanks, I’ll stick to my Uriah Heep and Black Sabbath.

            • Alby says:

Pretty old school for a young guy. Impressive. Especially Heep. They weren’t all that popular even when they were popular.

              • Andrew says:

Uriah Heep is the best band to crank up while driving fast with the windows down.

My favorite band is Rush. Other favorites are Heep, Yes, Deep Purple, Rainbow, Dio, Asia, Styx, Grand Funk Railroad, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Quartermass even though they only released one album

              • Andrew says:

Dont care what you think. Those are my favorite bands.

              • Alby says:

A lot of them were my favorites (Deep Purple) or still are (Yes). Was a Nice fan before ELP. Even back in the day, Heep was an acquired taste, but I had a couple of LPs.

I think it’s cool when a young person discovers older music. It shows open-mindedness.

Next time I get a turn at SOTD I’ll bust out some prog rock for you.

              • Andrew says:

I know that many of my favorite bands are not really “Good Music” (like Styx and ELP), but I like them because I connect to them and they make me feel happy. Not because I think they are creatively successful. Much of their music is, though. Listen to Go by Asia, Distant Early Warningby Rush, or Look at Yourself by Uriah Heep. They are great songs, hands down.

  2. Speaking of ‘gay’ musicians who don’t sound ‘gay’ in some traditional sense, I’m bringing the best bleeping harp (harmonica) player in the world, IMHO, to the Arden Gild Hall next April. He was here once before. He does things with a harmonica I’ve never heard before, and he’s also funny as shit. Here’s a taste:
