Trump’s Master Agrees With Syria Withdrawal

Filed in National by on December 20, 2018

I don’t know enough about our situation in Syria to say whether pulling out is “good” for the US or “bad” for us in the long run. I do know that Putin is a fan of Trump’s move, so there is that

From the New York Times:

Mr. Trump said on Wednesday that he was ordering the withdrawal because the United States military had achieved its goal of defeating the Islamic State militant group in Syria. But the move caught many by surprise, including some of his military and diplomatic advisers.

It has also drawn criticism, even among Republicans, for abandoning Kurdish allies in the fight against the Islamic State and for aiding the geopolitical ambitions of Iran and Russia in the Middle East. Speaking at his annual news conference, which typically runs for several hours, Mr. Putin said he broadly agreed that the Islamic State had been defeated in Syria.

“Donald’s right, and I agree with him,” Mr. Putin said.

I spoke to my Turkish friend on this last night. While we are both loath to have the US military deployed all over the globe we are leftists. International solidarity is very important. We have done and still do stand in solidarity with the Kurdish people in Turkey, Syria and Iraq.

This withdrawal leaves the door wide open for RTE to massacre the YPG (Kurdish fighters in Syria like the PKK in Turkey and Peshmerga in Iraq).

The entire situation sucks. It’s terrible for enlightened democratic people as it weakens the de facto Kurdish state.

This is why Putin digs it.

We should be out of there anyway, but it’s interesting that it suddenly happened while Trump was trying to get the Fed not to raise interest rates. The banks and the military industrial complex have close ties.

Trump is old enough to remember when anti-war people said we should declare a victory and get out of Viet Nam.

It was good advice then, is just as good today.
