Song of the Day 11/19: Argent, “Liar”

The theme song of the GOP’s defense of Trump. Most people know the Three Dog Night cover of the song, but this was the original version, written by Argent guitarist and lead singer Russ Ballard and released in 1970 on the band’s debut album. Released as a single, it sank without a trace.

Three Dog Night had much better luck the next year, taking their beefed-up cover to No. 7 in Billboard. Three Dog Night had three vocalists, each of whom took a turn as lead singer on different songs. This one went to Danny Hutton. I have no idea where this primitive music video came from, but you can see why Hutton was the band’s heartthrob.

  1. We old guys know this, but the ‘Argent’ name comes from Rod Argent, who was the keyboardist, songwriter and lyricist for The Zombies. Here’s my favorite Rod Argent song with Argent:
