Delaware Political Weekly: Jan. 17-23, 2020

1. Sarah McBride Is On The Ballot.  With her astounding fundraising, I can’t imagine a serious challenger against her in the Democratic Primary for the 1st Senatorial District.  I can’t say for sure, but she must’ve broken every record for initial fundraising in a Delaware legislative race.  It will be intriguing to see how she uses that literal political capital.

2. This Luann D’Agostino Just Might Give Mike Smith A Run For His Money.  I hadn’t heard of her, couldn’t find out anything about her. Maybe b/c I was searching for Louise D’Agostino instead of Luann D’Agostino. But her website has gone up, and she is an impressive candidate. For those who say that Mike Smith is doing great on constituent services, and that there’s no way he can lose in RD 22, any Republican who is running outside of Jesusland can lose this time. The numbers trend more D in the district every month, Trump isn’t gonna come close to winning this district, and the voters who are coming out come out to defeat Trump aren’t gonna cross over to vote for an R state rep. He’s still the favorite, but he’s not inevitable.

3. Ciro Poppiti Files, Will Face Karen Hartley-Nagle For County Council President. He’s competent. She’s not. He seems relatively stable. She doesn’t.

4. Matt Meyer Files For Reelection As New Castle County Executive. Sure he’s made a few missteps.  But after the corruption and bungling incompetence of the previous two NCC Executives, he’s a breath of fresh air.  And he’s well-meaning.

5. Filings. Wilmington City Council members Michelle Harlee and Zanthia Oliver, both D’s, filed for reelection.

That’s it for this week, granted a slow week. What’d I miss, and whaddayathink?

  1. Faithful Skeptic says:

Where’s the take-down of D’Agostino for the fact that she went to Eastern University, hasn’t posted a portrait on her website, doesn’t tell her age, shows no visible means of support, and . . . whatever? I mean, she may actually belong to a Christian congregation. Gives certain contributors here the willies.

    • Nice trolling. I just love how they all eventually show their true colors.

I’m not saying that D’Agostino’s candidacy should be viewed uncritically.

But I know a preemptive troll hit job when I see one.

      I just saw one.

    • Good morning Faithful. Sorry to hear about your willies. Regardless of your intentions, everyone should have a voice and I am happy to address your concerns. You viewed my website while it was still under construction – pictures were added within a few days and additional pictures and content are coming soon – https://www.electluann.com. I am 53 years old, a fact which could have been easily ascertained with basic math from the facts and dates on my website. I have no need to hide my age and believe I am the stronger candidate because of my life experience. After receiving my Associates Degree and while working full-time at HP, I chose to attend Eastern University because at the time they were the only college in the area offering an accelerated BA program for working adults. Online courses were not an option in 1990. Always willing to answer questions at luann@electluann.com.

This week two OTHER people threw their hat in the ring for NCC Council President with Facebook pages.

    Aja Ajavon
    Monique Johns

  3. JR says:

Her name is Louise Ann D’Agostino. She is 53 years old. She has always been a registered Democrat, but her voting history is weak. She has never voted in a Primary election and missed the General elections in 2014 and 2018.

  4. Alby says:

I never said Mike Smith can’t lose. I said he won’t be easy to beat, especially by someone without experience.

  5. Marketstkid says:

The county council President race is wild.

Ava and Monique both assumed they could get in as the minority candidate and undercut themselves.

How does Matt Meyer not have a primary opponent yet. He has to be one of the most unpopular yet to be challenged incumbents out there.

Still counting only one County Council primary. (Par for the course) That being Caneco against one of Gordon’s last cronies left.

Anyone challenging Boulden to give out marriage licenses? More over how is that still an elected office.

  6. RE Vanella says:

If the conventional wisdom is that Matt Meyer is wildly unpopular, but in reality, at a time when everyone is facing challenges he isn’t, what do you suppose this means?

    • Marketstkid says:

Everyone isn’t a trust fund baby like Matt with the ability to spend 100k of their own money on the race like he did in 16.

Comes down to resources, that’s my guess

      • Alby says:

What’s the evidence that he’s unpopular? People have to know someone to dislike them, and nobody ever knows who the county exec is when it’s not Gordon. I could ask 100 people who the county exec is before finding someone who does.

        • Marketstkid says:

Sure. The FOP and AFL CIO are in open war with him.

The mayor of Newark is fuming about the lawsuit.

Multiple County Council members are at war with him over his septic ordinance.

He got disinvited to speak at the women’s march due to the cover up of the sexual harassment suits against the county.

There is still 47 percent of Democrats who did not vote for him in 16.

I don’t personally dislike him. I think he’s a little arrogant and aloof but I was pointing to the opening for a primary candidate to emerge.

          • RE Vanella says:

Multiple council members, the cops, the Newark mayor.

I disagree with how you define unpopularity.

          • Alby says:

As REV notes, that’s a bunch of political players, not the public.

But your point is valid. You’d expect the county establishment to cough up at least a token opponent, and they still might. Is Tim Mullaney busy?

      • Alby says:

Methinks Mr. Skid doesn’t like Mr. Meyer very much. Care to explain why?

  7. RE Vanella says:

The answer is he’s not unpopular.
