‘Bulo’s Fave Tunes: April 2020

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on April 30, 2020

About as rich and diverse a month for new music that you could ever hope for.  Might as well start with music from the Album Most Likely To Top Most Critics’ Polls, at least based on the initial reviews.  Her lyrics are as good as any I’ve ever heard in rock/folk/roots/whatever music.  The music can be challenging, it’s not an ‘easy listen’.  But it’s worth your while to get lost in it:

Couldn’t decide whether this belonged under ‘A’ or ‘D’.  Figured we couldn’t wait any longer for a song this beautiful. Featuring Sufjan Stevens:

Personal fave Phoebe Bridgers takes a virtual vacation to Japan:

Why haven’t I heard of this guy before?:

By far the best video I saw all month:

Chill-inducing:

It is times like these (Fiona Apple) that I have to confront just how dumbed down my musical taste is.

Give me C–G–Am–F, over and over again with some nice harmonies and I’m happy as a pig in shit. So there is very little in the new Fiona Apple to interest someone like me. And yet, I wonder if it is something that will eventually change everything. Is this the Laurie Anderson “Oh Superman” moment?

    • Laurie Anderson is an apt analogy. To me, it’s the kind of album (if people still bought albums) that would be in lots of collections, but wouldn’t be played that much. I just love the lyrics or, perhaps more specifically, the epigrams. They’re brilliant, and these two songs are merely a sample. But would I play this from beginning to end very often? No. The songs deserve to be heard, though.

Sorry about using that Lucinda Williams song the other day. I never know what I’ll find in your new music roundups, but my rule of thumb is that if I’ve heard of the artist it’s too common for you.

Not at all. I chose this song b/c it sounded like a song that Waits could have written, which is probably why it’s my fave from the new album. I didn’t use the Dylan songs either, but they just didn’t grab me.

Hey, if good music deserves to be heard, it deserves to be heard at least twice.
