Cathy Cloutier ‘Can’t Be Bought And Won’t Be Bossed’. Nope. Just Extorted

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on September 24, 2020

For a ‘nice lady’, she sure prevaricates a lot.  The quote above is from her latest lit piece.  Time for a shot of the truth.

Fact: Cloutier voted to bury some pretty modest gun safety bills in the Senate Executive Committee.

Fact: Cloutier confided that she had to do vote that way, or she would have lost the support of the construction trade unions. ( A quick search of her campaign finance reports reveals lots of construction trade union support.)

Opinion: Seems like she was both bought AND bossed to me.

Demonstrable Lie: In her latest piece where Cathy is said to (I’m not making this up) ‘define(s) common sense when politics needs more of it’, Cathy claims to support:

Practical gun control: laws that make us all safer.

For the demonstrable lie, see above.  How can you support something when you voted against it?

Because she is a ‘nice lady’, it’s easy to overlook her history of on-the-record lies.  She may literally be the only elected official in Delaware history to have been pro-choice and anti-choice at the same time. That isn’t even a litmus test of where she stands on the issue. It’s a litmus test on whether she is truthful.  Taking diametric opposite positions on the same issue for two different groups conclusively labels her as untruthful.  How can you trust anything she says?

One last slightly off-topic point.  Her campaign appears to be suffused with nostalgia for a time when so many people in Brandywine Hundred (like Phil Cloutier) worked for DuPont, were moderate on social issues, and toed the Chamber line on stuff like workers’ rights, decent pay, and the like.  My proof?  Here is the front-page tagline from her latest piece:

We need her independent, bipartisan leadership now, (sic) more than ever.

In a district with 5000 more registered D’s than R’s, that’s the last thing we need. Not to mention, that time wasn’t so great at all.

Yo, Cathy, if you’d like to respond to the question as to why you’re claiming to support gun safety legislation while voting to bury it in committee, we have space for you.  If you’d like, I’ll even close your response to ‘nasty’ comments.  Time’s yours. I’ll give you 15 minutes.

  1. Steven Fackenthall says:

We must have new representation in SD5! Kyle Gay is the voice we need in Dover to represent the best interests of constituents in the district and Delawareans.

    • Kent says:

She didn’t vote. She simply didn’t sign the bill backer to release the gun bills from committee.

      • El Somnambulo says:

OK, Wiseass, let me explain something to you. In order to be signed out of committee, a majority of the committee members need to sign the backer. It is, in fact, a vote to let the bill out of committee–via signature. No signature= a ‘no’ vote. (More on that in my next piece…)

And yet, and yet, Wiseass, she portrays herself as a supporter of gun safety legislation. That is a lie, pure and simple. You don’t support legislation by helping to bury it in committee.

Your attempt to let her off the hook for yet another of her Profiles In Cowardice (more to come–even worse–soon) may be chivalrous, but it ignores the truth that Cathy Cloutier did not support releasing gun bills for a Senate vote, but still claims, falsely, to support the bills she helped to bury.

I apologize for jumping down your throat there. It’s just that I’ve seen her act for over 20 years now. She’s frayed my last nerve. Her excuses for disappearing when people need her the most (more coming soon on that) are untruthful, and caused harm to people who she had assured she would support. And her ‘I’ve always depended on the kindness of strangers’ act (there’s a litany of men who thought she was gonna marry them) is as nauseating as it is phony. (That reminds me–I wonder if RK was able to get a full refund on that ring…)

She’s not really a ‘nice lady’. She just learned how to portray one to suit her own purposes. She’s always been a phony.

  2. Hop-Frog says:

I got a big kick out of Cloutier’s latest lit piece too. Filled with boilerplate sentiments: “Affordable healthcare,” “Quality education,” “Clean air,” “Good jobs,” but not a hint of any “effective, resilient, balanced” proposals for how to achieve them.
And nowhere in its four pages does she mention that she’s a Republican. Neither does the doorhanger for Republican candidate for the 7th Rep District Jim “Hawk” Haubrich someone stuck in my mailbox last week. Could it be they’re ashamed of their party? Nah, they’re probably just hoping nobody will notice.

  3. Joe Connor says:

I am waiting to see “Hawk” put out a lit piece with “Ray” on the cover! Vote Larry, Kyle and Sarah!!!!!!!

    • Ray will not support ‘Hawk’. Period.

    • Claymontsertoo says:

Mark my words. Larry will have accomplishment very little two years from now for the 7th RD. He’s good at taking credit for others work like the Covid testing and food give aways in Claymont. He’ll probably do the same with others legislation. To quote a song “It’s a shame about Ray”.

      • C’mon, man, don’t be bitter. If Larry disappoints, Ray or someone else will challenge him. I see Larry being strongest in moving that police-dominated caucus in a more progressive direction. That move needs to be made. Ray made clear in his comments following the primary that he wasn’t going to do anything to upset the Delaware Way status quo.

        • Claymonstertoo says:

A little bitter, I have to admit. Just didn’t want another empty suit representing us but rather a smart liberal policy wonk who would get a bunch of good stuff done for the State AND the district. I do hope I’m wrong about Larry but the few times I’ve talked to him he didn’t seem to know who did what in government. I am psyched that we could have two great new senators representing Brandywine Hundred in Sara and Kyle. Cathy…..it’s been a good run but it is time to bid adieu.

          • I get it. When I look back at my years of blogging, perhaps the underlying theme is putting an end to the Delaware Way, aka ‘comfort the comfortable, bank those $600 checks, do what the Chamber and the cops want, don’t do anything the Governor doesn’t want’.

If you read what Ray said after he lost, you won’t find a liberal policy wonk, you’ll find a Delaware Way acolyte.

I like Ray, but I admit I was surprised and really disappointed by his comments.

      • Joe Connor says:

Give it up sport, ya lost yer gig dust off the resume:)

        • Claymonstertoo says:

Happily recently retired but not from political work. My only gig now is fishing and avoiding additional chores.

  4. There’s more. When it comes to being controlled by somebody and betraying your constituents, the next piece (hey, I can’t spill all the beans at once) will almost defy belief. Except–it’s all true, and it’s on the record.

  5. TheMoMo says:

Do you have a photo of this mailer? Surely, this white member of Republican Leadership is not using Shirley Chisholm’s own language aside her outright lies?

  6. C says:

Did Cathy support LGBT rights? Did Cathy support a woman’s right to choose? Did she support public schools and teachers? Did she support private and public sector unions? What are we really talking about here?

    • Alby says:

We’re talking about a Republican who votes like a Democrat sometimes to keep a job in a district she no longer lives in.

      Does that help?

    • Stay tuned to discover Cathy’s stellar record on LGBTQ rights. I’m holding off on that one–for now.

BTW, ‘c’, are you a supporter? I’d like to know.

  7. Jeff says:

Such a useless senator. I voted for her in the past because the Democrats running against her were invisible. I dont want a “balanced” senator whatever that means.. I want a senator who will do the right thing all of the time . Voting for Evan Gay , no hesitation

  8. Hop-Frog says:

Just received a text from her campaign, which reads, “Senator Cathy Cloutier is an independent leader who defines common sense. We need people like Cathy in politics now more than ever.” Also includes a link to her website and a photo of herself.

Now she’s trying to run as an INDEPENDENT? And I guess the photo is to remind local voters what the absentee incumbent looks like. Sorry, Cathy, all I get from it is “I”m a Republican and of course I’ll lie all I want to hang on to power.”

Your time is up. Kyle Evans Gay will clean your clock on Nov. 3.

  9. C says:

Elsom, not a supporter. Just saying that she has consistently supported some Democratic priorities. People in general like her. The voters will decide.

    • El Somnambulo says:

They will. The thing about Cloutier is she talks a good game, but acts otherwise. Just wait ’til the piece on her LGBTQ perfidy…

    • Alby says:

All labor unions are not liberal or progressive; indeed, few are. They just like to pretend they are. They’ve been skating on past accomplishments for 60 years now.

It was labor unionists who scuttled the gun control laws. It’s labor unionists — white ones, anyway — who abandoned the Democratic Party to vote for Reagan and most never came back.

Unions are out for themselves. Period.

As for your notion that because she’s not Greg Lavelle Democrats should vote for her instead of a real Democrat, c’mon. Sell that shit somewhere where people don’t notice it stinks.

  10. The D in Delaware says:

Can anyone confirm Cloutier’s home address is no longer in her district? Would like to see some hard evidence.

  11. ScarletWoman says:

You’re killing me with suspense, El Som. It’s just out of reach in my memory: Cloutier ghosted everyone on a pro-choice or similar vote she had promised to support … said she was away visiting a sick relative …who was neither sick at that time, nor a relative … I just remember it didn’t pass the smell test. Can’t wait for your expose!

    • Patience, my friend. She’s been pretty much running exclusively a lit campaign–one mailer a week. I like to counter-program. However, I’ll post it this week regardless. You are sorta remembering one incident. It was terrible. But there were TWO incidents, and the other (first one) was even worse.

BTW, you can no longer ‘Chat With Cathy’ in person. Gonna have to make an appointment to talk with her on the phone from her Hockessin manse. Used to be you merely had to call your State Senator to talk with them. Not anymore, not with Cloutier anyway.

      She’s gone into hiding.
