Song of the Day: Richard Thompson, “Oops I Did It Again”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, National by on January 13, 2021

Congrats, Donnie Two Scoops, you’re the first guy to do that getting impeached thing again.

When a magazine asked Richard Thompson for a list of the best popular songs of the past 1,000 years, he responded by releasing a live double LP of the tunes he selected. Many of them are old — really old — folk songs, but he included a few modern covers, none more unexpected than this one, the lead single from Britney Spears’ second album. This is taken from a DVD filmed on a later tour in 2006.

The song was written by Swedish hitmaker Max Martin, who pretty much ruined popular music with his cookie-cutter pop. For those who inexplicably might care, here’s the original. I confess I never understood how this person became popular. Her looks are nothing special, she has a horrible voice unless you want to hear what Betty Boop would sound like as a contralto, and she lip-synched it all in concert. It’s the musical equivalent of fast food, neither tasty nor nourishing. Enjoy.

The lyrics are remarkably spot on for Trump who – even as he says his speech wasn’t inciting violence – threatens the country with violence. “It (impeachment) could be dangerous”

I think I did it again
I made you believe we’re more than just friends

It might seem like a crush
But it doesn’t mean that I’m serious
‘Cause to lose all my senses
That is just so typically me

I played with your heart, got lost in the game
Oh you think I’m in love
    That I’m sent from above
    I’m not that innocent

Can’t you see I’m a fool in so many ways

RT does imbue the song with some gravitas.
