‘Cancer for the Republican Party’: McConnell condemns ‘loony lies’ in swipe at Marjorie Taylor Greene
(CNN)Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell on Monday issued a tacit rebuke of controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, slamming the Georgia Republican’s “loony lies and conspiracy theories” as a “cancer” for the party.
“Loony lies and conspiracy theories are cancer for the Republican Party and our country,” McConnell said in a statement. “Somebody who’s suggested that perhaps no airplane hit the Pentagon on 9/11, that horrifying school shootings were pre-staged, and that the Clintons crashed JFK Jr.’s airplane is not living in reality. This has nothing to do with the challenges facing American families or the robust debates on substance that can strengthen our party.”
Ms Greene hit back via social media, saying the “real cancer for the Republican Party is weak Republicans who only know how to lose gracefully”.
“This is why we are losing our country,”
In other McConnell news, we’ll know in the next few days if Biden is going to repeat Obama’s mistakes.
Jim Justice, coal plutocrat and GOP governor of West Virginia, unexpectedly gets to the left of Joe Manchin and gives Manchin cover on the COVID package. Justice in a CNN interview:
“Trying to be per se fiscally responsible at this point in time with what we’ve got going on in this country. If we actually throw away some money right now, so what?”
Manchin was gearing up to grandstand over the size of the package. I see (or want to see) the hand of Joe Biden in Justice’s comment. I am simultaneously in awe at the maneuver, and trying not to think about what Biden may have promised Justice.
How do you bargain with congressional Republicans (and Manchin) who don’t want anything other than to not be primaried.
I guess you just peel them off one by one, like Justice. It’s very situational. Justice is coal-rich and I think his main interest is minimizing regulation of his coal empire. (That’s why I am apprehensive about what Biden may have done to secure Justice’s support.)
Plus, a shower of $1400 checks in WV may soften hearts and minds.
