Protest & Organize & Vote

Filed in National by on August 26, 2021

Watching fanged zealots yell at school boards (and clap gleefully for their fellow yellers) I keep returning to something REV said in a podcast.  I’m going to make a hash of it but it was something like – Getting protest energy and capitalizing on it by organizing and recruiting candidates and keeping everyone together to vote is the program.

I think of that political activism flywheel when I see those Karens lacerating their school boards because that program seems to be baked into the GOP DNA right now.   Meanwhile party Democrats always seem to be wary of gathering any political energy.

Meeting the other side in person and in numbers at School Board meetings across the state is critical. They draw big energy from their behavior and they are deflated by organized sane humans speaking truth. I was at the August BSD meeting and will be making it a regular thing. Let’s ramp this up!

Unfortunately, the mere presence indoors of a bunch of antivaxx, anti-mask lunatics is going to me say no thanks to attending, and I daresay other people of intelligence fall into that boat as well. I’m fully vaxxed and mask up indoors in public places. Going to the grocery store is one thing, but putting myself in a room with people I *know* aren’t taking precautions and are yelling and ranting and spewing particulates into the air? That’s too high of a risk for my unvaccinated kids and my immunocompromised spouse and parents.

Virtual testimony doesn’t seem to attract attention like the morons’ in-person virus orgies.

Of course. You are making the right choice. But to the larger point – other than being 100% opposed to Trump – I can’t think of any issue that moves Democrats to hit the streets.

I guess it is easier to be in the opposition and be angry over the party in power using that power, but I still think Democrats are mostly missing the boat on getting people involved.

That paraphrase of me seems pretty good to me.
