DL Open Thread Wednesday September 1, 2021

All of yesterday’s Open Thread stuff still holds so you can re-read that for today’s news.  Just a couple of updates.  For example,  Joe Biden still won our 20 year war by leaving Afghanistan but now he is pushing back on dishonest wingnut critics who set the media narrative:

President Joe Biden delivered a defiant and unvarnished response: I did the right thing. And as messy as it was, things would have been worse if we waited.

“We succeeded in what we set out to do in Afghanistan over a decade ago. Then, we stayed for another decade. It was time to end the war,” Biden said. He noted that the mission had expanded far beyond the initial goal of responding to the 9/11 attacks, costing $300 million a day and more than 2,400 American lives in its 20-year duration.

The “fix” for social security has always been hiding in plain sight.  Raise the cap!
WASHINGTON — The sharp shock of the coronavirus recession pushed Social Security a year closer to insolvency but left Medicare’s exhaustion date unchanged, the government reported Tuesday in a counterintuitive assessment that deepens the uncertainty around the nation’s bedrock retirement programs.

Scrap The Cap and make the rich pay on every cent they make, just like the rest of us. It hasn’t been hiding other in that it evokes stark terror in the hearts of all Republicans and “moderates” in the Democratic party, same for negotiating the cost of drugs like all the other advance countries. Two solutions that would literally cost us nothing and yet we can’t have it.

I think I’ll retire and move to Texas so i can rat out women who potentially got an abortion so i can make some bank.

The law is horrifically insidious. Not only can you sue them and the medical provider, you can sue any person who potentially assisted: any employee at the facility, the Uber driver who brought her, the counselor with whom she spoke the week before, her Mom who said it was the right thing to do.

Texas Right to Life has already set up a website for whistleblowers — “Texas Right to Life will ensure that these lawbreakers are held accountable for their actions. Use the links below to report anyone who is violating the Texas Heartbeat Act by aiding or abetting a post-heartbeat abortion. And report any person or entity that aids or abets (or that intends to aid or abet) an illegal abortion in Texas.” — and yep, you could make a fortune.
