Song of the Day 8/10: Bananarama, “Cruel Summer”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, National by on August 10, 2022

Now Republicans think it’s a banana republic? Gee, I thought that happened when they all fell in line behind a known criminal. Cruel summer, ain’t it, bitches?

This song became a No. 9 hit in the US in 1984 when it was included in the hit movie “Karate Kid.” That was a year after it reached No. 8 in the UK, where they had 14 Top 20 hits in the ’80s. Despite that, they never reached No. 1 in their home country, but they did in the US with a remake of the Shocking Blue hit “Venus” in 1986.

Still, “Cruel Summer” is their signature song — they’ve recorded it three more times since the original.

This posting of “Cruel Summer” Bananarama is serendipitous. This music is now the background song to Russians fleeing Crimea- after the successful attack on an Russian aviation base. Ukrainian trolls are posting miles of Russian tourist cars waiting to cross the bridge back into Russia.(ending their summer vacations) – SUCH A CRUEL SUMMER….
