Florida teachers told to remove books from classroom libraries or risk felony prosecution

Teachers in Manatee County, Florida, are being told to make their classroom libraries — and any other “unvetted” book — inaccessible to students, or risk felony prosecution. The new policy is part of an effort to comply with new laws and regulations championed by Governor Ron DeSantis (R). It is based on the premise, promoted by right-wing advocacy groups, that teachers and librarians are using books to “groom” students or indoctrinate them with leftist ideologies.

Can we really have a country in which some states are allowed to force 14 year old rape victims to carry pregnancies to term and teachers get arrested “unvetted” classroom libraries?

I’m seriously asking, are we really a country anymore or a loose confederation of rogue states?

I would really love to hear from teachers in Florida- if you aren’t a right-wing, racist, nut job, why are you still working in Florida

Would the last teacher out of Florida please lock the door? As expected there is a national shortage of teachers, perhaps it’s something about being demonized in red states, perhaps because the pay is low and likely to stay that way or perhaps because the fools now seek to criminalize teachers and their horrific “unvetted ” books. In addition look for higher education to refuse to accept Floridians. Love the Republicans plan to use cops and retired military as substitute teachers, we should call it Fascism 101, for that is what it will be.

How many Democrats do you know who still spend money in Florida? I know too many who spend vacations in Florida, own property in Florida, or retire or aspire to retire in Florida. Many of these people even stick to various penny-ante boycotts of various consumer products for political reasons, but Florida gets a full pass.

Haven’t been there except stopovers at the Miami airport in 40 years. I preferred Arizona because it’s drier and alligator-free, but I haven’t been there for nearly 20 years. I love Italy, but I won’t be going there unless and until they 86 their latest fascist government.

My conclusion has long been that fascism flourishes in sunshine.

No word on whether the youth pastor was forcing kids to read ‘The Color Purple’.

MARCO ISLAND, Fla. — The Marco Island Police Department arrested a youth pastor for exchanging explicit texts with a minor. Officers say 26-year-old Christopher Jaime Reyes, a youth pastor at the Wesley Methodist Church of Marco Island, was transmitting electronic messages for three years to an underage victim.

  6. bamboozer says:

“Youth Pastor” is code for child molester, “Groomer” and all the rest. As noted they roam free, especially in the south but perhaps all over. Would suggest that Gawd did not save them, nor their victims.

  7. jason330 says:

Yeah. A drag queen reading to your child is a huge danger, but allowing the same child camp out overnight with a youth pastor isn’t? What!?!?

I get not understanding facts & statistics but that’s putting your whack-a-doodle politics ahead of your kid’s safety.
