‘Bulo’s Fave Tunes: January 2024

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, Featured by on February 1, 2024

The songs are more mainstream this month, the artists less diverse.  Don’t know why, just worked out that way.  The good news?:  Some great songs in the mix, not a clunker in the bunch:

My daughters first saw Madi Diaz at a Young Friends event. She then opened a really neat Coffee House show at the Gild Hall with Carrie Rodriguez and Ben Sollee back in 2010.  Time for a Joe DelTufo photo:

This makes me happy:

Year-end Top 50 fer sure:

OK, you try to choose between these two songs.  I can’t.  I only know that Alynda Lee Segarra is one of the most essential artists to come along in some time:

Don’t fight it–they’re really good. An easy, albeit lazy, pick as Nathan Arizona’s Fave Tune Of The Month:

It’s not just the future of music that’s female, it’s the present.  This month’s tunes are a great argument for that thesis:

Musical Caffeine:

Nothin’ wrong with languor–or is it languidity?:

Let’s close out on yet another languorous note:

I don’t know if there will be a better month of tunes all year.  At least, it’ll be hard to top.

Yeah, Lemon Twigs on top. I’ve been kind of surprised at their critical acclaim for music that would have been more fashionable a few decades ago. I like Sara Jarosz’s new rockish style, but I liked her old style too. I’ve been fascinated by Future Islands’ Samuel T. Herring since the band’s appearance on Letterman a few years ago. He just doesn’t look like the lead singer in a band, much less a synth-pop group. But turns out he’s perfect.

    • I remember seeing Sarah Jarosz many years ago at the Non-COMMvention upstairs at the Queen. Don’t think she was yet out of her teens then.

I just think she’s one of those artists we can trust–no matter where her muse takes her.

Holy-Paul-MaCartney! The Lemon Twigs have a bass player playing the Hofner with a pick! Take me back to the 60s, please!

Chris O’Leary reminds me of James Harman and the Dangerous Gentlemen…”Thank ya baaaaby”

Nice to see Fat Possum is still makin’ rekkids.
