Donald Trump’s case of arrested development manifests itself again today with one of his incredibly stupid ideas brought to life: An Indy car race through the streets of Washington DC, tied to the semiquincentennial. Because Trump has the brain of a 12-year-old without the corresponding vocabulary, it’s called the Freedom 250 Grand Prix.
As you might expect, it looks like a terrible idea, not least because the capital’s streets aren’t smooth enough for Indy cars racing at speed. Fans can hope for at least one collision: Trump will attend the race with Melania, who could run into a possessive Natalie Harp.
Surprisingly, the Speed Racer theme hasn’t been covered by any rock bands looking for an ironic concert number. Stan Bush, who wrote music for several cartoonish movies like the “Transformers” franchise, recorded it for a Disney album in 1996.
A live-action Speed Racer film by the Wachowskis was released in 2008 to mostly negative reviews. It used a new version of the theme song over the closing credits. Ali Dee is a white rapper from New York, and his contributions didn’t do much to elevate what’s essentially a jingle.
Two Nice Girls, an Austin-based quarter who billed themselves a dyke rock band, were more imaginative. They recorded a swingy version for their 1990 album “Like a Version.”
