Is Donald Trump more unhinged than usual lately? It’s a hard theory to prove, given how unhinged he’s been for years, but the lunatic pronouncements seem to be coming at a faster pace. Making the midterms all about him? Demanding the Federal Reserve cut the interest rate to 1%? Asking the crowd at his Nuremberg-style rally to pledge to cheat for him? I think the guy is cracking up.
“Cracking Up” appeared on what was released as Nick Lowe’s second solo album, “Labour of Lust,” but it was actually recorded by Rockpile, the band Lowe formed with guitarist Dave Edmunds. Because they were signed to different record labels they couldn’t release material under the band’s name, so their music appeared as solo albums by one or the other. They recorded Edmunds’ “Repeat When Necessary” simultaneously with Lowe’s LP. Released as a single, it made the lower reaches of the UK charts.
The only significant cover of the song was by Tom Petty, who released it as a B-side in 1985.
