Songs Of The Day 10/23: Joni Mitchell-Both Sides, Now & Chelsea Morning
Other artists had already recorded these classics before Joni got around to doing them on her 1969 album, Clouds. I consider her to be one of our greatest singer/songwriters. I think she got better as a singer as she progressed in her career, but there’s no denying that these are two classic songs. Gotta admit, the comma in Both Sides, Now still annoys me. (Get over it, ‘Bulo), but the song gives me goosebumps:
I was fortunate enough to see Joni live a couple of years of this. Another song that gives me chills:
My Joni favorites are “Carey,” a happy breakup song that is not a kiss-off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auTSZTU1tm0
and “Morning Morgantown” (for a morning song, equal to or better than Chelsea Morning): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DawDAQyZ1GQ
Someone once said Carey’s refrain described an S&M relationship, and it’s never sounded the same to me since.
