Song of the Day 7/18: Tenacious D, “Tribute”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on July 18, 2024

OK, so now we’re all supposed to act shocked and saddened by the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. The guy in Tenacious D – not Jack Black, the other guy – didn’t, and now the duo is no more.

Kyle Gass is the guy’s name. When Black surprised him with a birthday cake during a concert in Australia the other night, Gass made a wish before he blew out the candles, that the next would-be assassin didn’t miss.

This was not an isolated sentiment. People all over the country have lost their jobs for making essentially the same joke. Gass’s gaffe seems to have ended his band.

Black quickly distanced himself, cancelling the handful of dates remaining on his tour Down Under and telling the media he was blindsided by the joke – which, duh, it was ad-libbed. I understand why he’s not defending his long-time musical partner, though – he wants to avoid being targeted by enraged MAGAts, which, good luck with that.

Black and Gass formed Tenacious D 30 years ago, when Black was still getting bit parts in movies. They played their first gig when this was the only song they had written at the time. If Black is serious about ending the band, this serves as a fitting tribute.

Kyle glass’ best performance was as the writer who didn’t write anything in Elf .

Also, if jack black didn’t make everything humorous he’d be a fantastic musician/singer
