He was pretending to be a helpless old man so he could stay in the photo. Spain responded by releasing an official version with the dotard cropped out.
I’d say the problem is that nobody ever tells Trump what they’d like to – “Get out!” – but Melania apparently has. She’s the first FLOTUS since Pat Nixon who didn’t share a bedroom with her husband.

I disagree. Trump really is a helpless old man. Venal but addled. Where else would he think he should be but the center of the picture?
IMO feeble, yes, but not as confused as he pretended to be. Of course in the old days he would have stayed at the center and insisted they take the photo that way.
