Ending months of speculation, Mitch McConnell was wheeled into the Capitol yesterday, proving that rumors of his death had been greatly exaggerated. It was the first time the 84-year-old was seen in public since his hospitalization in June.
The notion that McConnell was dead, as opposed to seriously ill, never made much sense. It’s theoretically possible that he could have been stashed in a hospital morgue all this time, but such a conspiracy would have required the cooperation and silence of the hospital and who knows how many doctors and nurses, who would have faced consequences should the ruse be discovered.
What they were hiding was his frailty, and they were still trying to hide it yesterday: They asked the media not to record video, and the media meekly complied. So if Mitch is back from the dead, he’s not quite all the way back.
