MLS Event in Chester LIVE POST from Von Cracker
Von Cracker just got back from the MLS (soccer for you losers that don’t a real sport)
Thanks VC
Hi all –
Hector & I just returned from the MLS-Philly Expansion Press Conference, which was in the hall on the 2nd floor of our building (the old, renovated Philly Electrical Power Plant on the river just south of the Barry Bridge). How convenient!!!!
First of all, it was PACKED! The Sons of Ben
were there in full force, signing, chanting, and booing any reference made about Landon Donovan, NY and DC. Along with the supporters was The Polish Brigade (I think that’s the name), a Mummers String Band – not sure though if they are going to be a part of the crowd in 2010 when the games being…though that would be cool…..
Nothing notable was mentioned about the team that we don’t know already, except that the name will be decided by popular vote…so if you have a preference (mine is Philadelphia Athletic), you’ll be able to vote soon probably via their website…
On the community level though, there were quite a few announcements. Besides the $100 million for the 20,000 seat state-of-the-art stadium, $400 million of public and private funds will go to building entertainment and business-residential complexes, a river walk, and public transportation improvements.
If you’re interested in season tickets, the club is taking deposits for $50 per seat. The deposit will go to the balance of the season ticket price as well.
Some of the people that were there: The MC was Mr. Excitable himself, Michael Barkan, along with Gov Rendell, MLS Commish Garber, Mayor Nutter, the mayor of Chester, city and county politicos, the new GM, and the guy who assisted on the winning US goal against England in the 1950 World Cup!
If you want to see highlights, check out Comcast SportsNet at 6:30 tonight or check out MLS.com; I believe the site had a live stream of the presser and may still be available…
COME ON YOU ATTICS!!!!!
I forgot to mention that a franchise-led soccer academy will be part of the development package too….
Isn’t soccer a commie sport?
Attics…oh right, Charlton Athletic. Nice one, but you’ll probably wind up with Athletico because of the Dago vote.
The best one yet that I heard is the Phelons.
Nothing notable was mentioned about the team that we don’t know already, except that the name will be decided by popular vote…so if you have a preference (mine is Philadelphia Athletic),
One word: Liverpool
Philadelphia FC
The Philly Site is here:

Liverpool? Because scousers are all thieves too?
The Red Stars
Naaah, too commie. You might as well call it Dynamo Philly. I’m digging the Sons of Ben, how about tying Franklin in and calling them the Lightning?
flying kikes…woops, kites
VC is an athletic supporter! But I like the Phelons too.
If was probably the Polish-American String Band.
Cahmon yooo Attics! I hung out in the loading dock with the Sons of Ben pre press conference. They arrived about 125 strong 90 minutes prior to get in great voice. Unfortunately I had a meeting at 2.00 and missed the actual announcement. But I did sneak into the VIP cocktail party and saw the MLS commish.
I’ll be honest – the “Four Leaf Clover” thing is growing on me! It’s still not quite “You’ll Never Walk Alone”!
