  1. It’s not just a tip any more. News release from the Governor’s Office:

“Markell Asks Nancy Cook to Serve as Kent County Register of Wills

Cook Will Serve Until Position Can Be Filled At Next General Election

Governor Jack Markell will name former state senator Nancy Cook to serve out the rest of Thomas Weyant’s term as Kent County Register of Wills. Weyant announced in September that he would retire effective November 1, 2011. He was last elected Register of Wills in 2008 and his current term expires in December 2012.

When there is a vacancy in an elected county row office, it is the governor’s responsibility to make an appointment to fill the vacancy.

“Nancy’s long career of dedicated public service, her attention to detail and unwavering devotion to Kent County makes her well-suited for the Register of Wills post,” Gov. Markell said. “Tom Weyant’s kind heart and 40 years of service to the county means he left big shoes to fill, but I’d say Nancy is a pretty good match.”

Cook served as a senator from 1974 to 2010. She was known for her oversight of the state budget as co-chair of the Joint Finance Committee, her support of seniors and her staunch advocacy for Kent County. Cook told the Governor she will not seek election to the post in 2012.

“I look forward to fulfilling the needs of Kent County again and am pleased the Governor asked me to serve,” Cook said. “I’ve always said that county row offices are important and am looking forward to working with the public in this new capacity.”

Unbelievable. Why not reward the person who did more to promote a culture of entitlement and corruption in Legislative Hall with yet another position?

This is also more than a bit ironic coming one day after Gov. Markell promoted FOIA reforms. Nobody did more to keep the lid tightly sealed on fiscal deliberations than Nancy Cook.

Say-y-y-y, it’s Friday afternoon, and yet another Friday afternoon news dump. Which is what Markell has just taken all over advocates for open government in Delaware.

    Awful, just awful.

Shame on Gov. Markell. How can he allow himself to be led around by this woman? What does he owe her?

  3. John Manifold says:

There are many worse things that the governor could do. Appointing Cook probably helps the administration in many ways.

  4. occam says:

Anything that helps the administration but hurts Delaware isn’t worth doing.

  5. John Manifold says:

Exactly how does having Nancy Cook [or Ron Waller or Rita Justice or Margo Ewing Bane, each of whom has held the office] as Register of Wills “hurt Delaware”?

You mean to tell me there were no other Democratic politicians in Kent County interested in holding a do-nothing part-time “job” until next November?
