Wednesday Open Thread [7.18.12]

Two more days til the weekend, but if you are anything like me you are still working overtime to escape this heinous weather. There’s a massive and serious drought in the Midwest — where crops of corn and soy are suffering. That means higher prices for food (and maybe gas) shortly. Even in Delaware, the […]

QOTD — Should Penn State Football Get the Death Penalty?

Filed in National by on July 17, 2012 71 Comments

Buzz Bissinger has written one righteous condemnation of the Penn State football program and Penn State administration in this week’s Daily Beast. He suggests the NCAA impose a 5 year ban for Penn State’s football program — something that would certainly be meaningful to Penn State as a punishment.

Regular Americans Losing Their Political Voice

Using the conservative mantra that Money = Speech, this inforgraphic shows just how much ordinary Americans are being drowned out of the conversation and our Government. Because those with the money can simply buy the policy they want, increasingly, what Americans clearly want to happen is simply not being done.

DISCLOSE Act Vote Tonight

Filed in National by on July 16, 2012 4 Comments

The full name is Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light On Spending in Elections (DISCLOSE) Act. It is meant to rebalance the books that have been utterly upended by Citizen’s United, allowing unlimited spending by corporations. As specifically allowed for in Justice Kennedy’s majority opinion for Citizen’s United, nothing stops Congress from asking for greater transparency for those donations.

Romney’s Evasive Character Unfit for Presidency

That is the title of this intriguing article by Robert Creamer, published over at The Democratic Strategist. In it, he details the multiple things we have learned about Romney over the past few months in an argument to show that Romney is fundamentally unfit to be President. Go read the whole thing, because it is the entire argument that is interesting, not just these key bits:

Saturday Open Thread [7.14.12]

It is a nice, rainy Saturday meaning that all of our plants get watered for free for a change. It is also a busy Saturday as pretty much everyone I know in the city is knocking on doors, looking for votes for candidates. And it’s Bastille Day! The closest great celebration of this is over at Fairmount Park at the Eastern Penitentiary, featuring a Marie Antoinette hauled off to the guillotine yelling, “Let them eat Tastycakes!” with thousands of Tastycakes launched off into the crowd. Fun!

WHYY Sponsors Wilmington Voter Forums

Filed in Delaware by on July 13, 2012 3 Comments

WHYY will sponsor another round of voter forums designed to let Wilmington voters frame the issues that they want Mayoral candidates to address in an upcoming televised debate. This is NOT a candidate forum, but this is a place where voters can come together to provide input to the kind of questions they want Mayoral candidates to answer. They did this in 2010 in prep ration for televised debates for DE Senate and representative races. Both Pandora and I went to the one held in the city that year and we were impressed with this process and what came out of it. If you have the chance to go, I highly recommend it.

Calling All Fashion Police: The Olympic 2012 US Uniforms

The uniforms (at least the Opening Cenremony ones) were unvieled this past Tuesday and they aren’t getting good reviews. Designed by Ralph Lauren and Made in China, these uniforms seem to be a disappointment everywhere. Think “Chariots of Fire” meets American Airlines flight attendant.
