This section of Old South DuPont Highway, south of Tybouts Corner, is noteworthy for being the first section of divided highway in the world. The southbound lanes, which were the original lanes built in between 1917 and 1923, are on the left. Photo from xzmattzx on Flickr.
Governor Markell’s Weekly Message
The Governor was a little late in posting his video to YouTube yesterday, so he missed out on the Weekly Addresses column. But hey, that’s smart. Now he gets the spotlight to himself and he doesn’t have to share it with that glory hog Obama. LOL.
Sunday Open Thread [11.23.14]
Bill Maher, at the top of his New Rules segment on his HBO show Friday night, accurately described the current political situation. Maher said: “Now that they’ve wrestled his approval rating down to the basement, and grabbed control of both houses of Congress, Republicans must explain why this guy (Obama) keeps kicking your ass. It’s like one of those action movies where you tie the hero up, chain him to a chair, then he headbutts you unconscious, gets up, and leaves a note signed Django.” Come inside for the video…
I love that President Obama is now the sole Democratic agenda setter in Washington. The bipartisanship-seeking cowards that call themselves Democrats, namely Tom Carper, can learn from Obama’s example. Let’s have more of it. If the Republicans even attempt to touch Obamacare, Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid, the President vetos and every Democrat …. every Democrat…. shuts the fuck up and supports the President. I am looking directly at you, Tom.
As a side note, does Tom Carper retire in 2018? I suspect not, but there is a backlog of Democrats piling up waiting for him to move on (Biden, Markell, Carney).
The Weekly Addresses
President Obama speaks about his Immigration Accountability Action. Governor Markell has not posted his weekly message yet. We will post it once we receive it. The West Wing Week follows the President through the week from his trip to Asia and Australia up until his Immigration speech on Thursday. It also features an entire summit audience singing Happy Birthday to our Vice President Uncle Joe Biden. And a new feature video from the White House, a behind the scenes talk with the President before his address on Thursday. Come inside for the videos.

Friday Open Thread [11.21.14]
With the President’s action last night, he was able to simultaneously implement his party’s policy goals while dividing the opposition. That’s why Democrats have the advantage in this fight. Republicans will now go mad, from the conservative media to the conservative legislator. From Ted Cruz talking about Roman Dictators to Bill O’Rielly screaming at an undocumented journalist that he does not belong here to the actual bonafide racist Republicans in the House and Senate screaming about brown people and impeachment.
It was a brilliant moment in his Presidency. And the President delayed it from September because nervous fuck-wit coward congressional Democrats were a-scared of facing the voters with this policy. They are so fucking stupid they deserved to lose. This immigration makes Republicans forget to hide their bigotry and radicalness. It drives them absolutely insane, and they let the people see it.
“He’s daring Republicans to offer their sharpest reactions. Everything from government shutdowns to lawsuits to, yes, impeachment will be in the mix, with the driving consensus that the party needs to do something to register its extreme disapproval.”
“He’s daring them to offer and pass a different set of policies. The fact that the substance of the executive order won’t take effect for six months gives the new GOP majority in Congress another half year to do what Congress hasn’t been able to do over the decade immigration reform has been on the agenda.”
Thursday Open Thread [11.20.14]
“Rising Republican hostility toward President Obama’s impending immigration plan is as intense as has ever existed between the White House and the GOP,” the Los Angeles Times reports.
“But the strong reaction by Republican leaders has less to do with opposition to the nuts and bolts of the president’s immigration policy and more to do with fear and anger that the issue will derail the agenda of the new Republican majority before the next Congress even convenes. Republican leaders who had hoped to focus on corporate tax reform, fast-track trade pacts, repealing the president’s healthcare law and loosening environmental restrictions on coal are instead being dragged into an immigration skirmish that they’ve tried studiously to avoid for most of the last year.”
I imagine that was the plan. And Republicans are too bigoted and dumb enough to fall for it. Indeed, this whole fucking immigration mess is due to their unabashed racism on the part of the GOP. All they had to do is pass the Senate plan, which was a compromise with Senate Republicans that provide much increased (and wasteful) border security. And this issue would be over with and the GOP would be back to wooing the Latino vote. Instead, they are going to freak the fuck out and let the racist flag fly proudly, and they are going to lose Latinos for multiple centuries. For the President’s part, it is always golden when the right thing to do syncs up with the politically right thing to do.
