Romney goes into this election, as he has lived his life - with a great many advantages. The Bush economy and the nation's short memory of how we got here. The political press in the employ of his major financial backers. One third of the country being died in the wool racists. Just the right amount of gray at the temples to appear seasoned, yet energetic. The list of reason why Romney should win goes on and on. The list of reasons why he will lose is short.

Conservatives push Romney into a terrible choice.

The brazen willingness to lie that animates the Romney campaign raises and interesting question.

Suppose a major party candidate for president believed we were in a “post-truth” era and actually campaigned that way. Would political reporters in the mainstream press figure it out and tell us?

What do I like the most? There is, of course, the use of O'Donnell as a synonym for Republican stupidity. There is the fact that teabag lunacy has significantly improved the odds that the Dems will hold onto their majority in the Senate, but I think the thing I like the most are the pictures. They provide the clearest proof to date that Republicans are nominating poorly disguised space alien lizards to run for office. Seriously, I need to see the long form birth certificates for these guys.

I love how Team Obama is using the tax secrecy issue to continue to kick Romney while he is down. Also, notice how this ad slyly revisits Harry Reid's "0%" tax rate assertion. That is a bare knuckle beat down....daring Romney to whimper for an apology.

From a high of 30, Pawlenty is now trading at 15. Someone knows something (which is the point of the futures market). The New York Times sums up the Veepstakes so:

The extended summertime silence of Mr. Romney, the Republican candidate, on his choice of a running mate has provided a new opening for social and economic conservatives to lobby for a die-hard member of their movement to join the Republican ticket.

Granted, I only watched the second half when our scrubs schooled Pittsburgh's scrubs, but I liked what I saw and have complete confidence in the following prediction: "The Eagles will win enough games to make it to the playoffs. They will then lose at home against a wildcard team that made it in with a 500 record." Take it to the bank!

It was true for Bush, as it has been true for centuries. Unless you are willing to be as bloodthirsty and ruthless as Rome, occupations don't work.

Romney is letting Obama pound him over the head with taxes, and that is vexing Republicans. A legion of Republican pundits have called for Romney to stop the blood letting, but Team Romney seems convinced that it can ride out the storm, or reboot the conversation by picking a blockbuster VP. We'll see. In the meantime...

Delaware's Jack Markell piles on Romney pointing out the obvious, that Romney should have know that this was going to be an issue.

“It would seem to me that he would be ready for this, recognizing the comparison would come up to his father and to others,” Markell said. “The issue is he’s the one running for president. The questions have been raised about him, he could have them answered.”

Markell rubs salt into GOP wounds by making this about Romney's poor judgment, and I LOVE IT!

RNC announced its list of convention speakers; McCain, Haley, Huckabee, & Rice are in. Many GOP household names are not. Among the snubbed, Rick Santorum is the first to speak up about it. He did so last week when Santorum dared Team Romney to leave him out:

This is reason number 1,365 why no tax info will be released by team Romney. Until the votes are counted on the floor of the convention, Romney isn't the GOP's nominee for the office of the President of the United States. Therefor, Romney's promise to divest himself of possibly objectionable investments would be scrutinized if tax returns were released. Check it out.
