Draft Statement from Senator Carper on his filing for reelection to the United States Senate Found on Train

Today, I formally filed for election to serve the banks (TC, see my notes throughout. "people" sounds better here) of Delaware in the United States Senate. When I take the train back home to Delaware almost every night, I laugh my ass off at the fact that I have (too much transparency... try "am humbled by") the opportunity the people of the First State have given me to serve them in our nation's capitol. Delaware is a place where the petty politics of division and negativity that we see all too often in Washington these days aren't welcome.

Carney speaks at a 9th grade level – Coons speaks at a 13th grade level – Carper speaks at a 9th grade level

Fairly predicable. Coons is the erudite egghead in the bunch. Carney knows enough words to give a good pep talk to a JV football team and after 80 years in politics, Carper naturally speaks down to everyone. These are the findings of Sunlight Labs which crunched the numbers. Among their macro-findings, Congress talk more dumb this year.

Obama vs. McCain & Obama vs. Romney

As you can see from the charts below, McCain was the underdog from wire to wire. Following George Bush was a mugs game, and I'm frankly surprised that someone with McCain's political instincts undertook such foolishness. Maybe he was hoping to line up against Hilary? Anyway, after a momentary glimpse of 50/50 upon wrapping up the nomination, an Obama win was never really in question. The Obama/Romney chart is altogether different. The generic Republican had a chance for a while, but you can see that the GOP primary really took a toll on Romney. Once Obama put away the rope-adope, and clicked into campaign mode, he opened a huge lead on Romney. A lead so wide that when Romney locked down the nomination, it registered as a blip among the IEM bettors.

Fecal Tsunami

Barack Obama may have the mojo — and I stress may — to withstand the fecal tsunami of GOP super PAC attack ads this year. But four years from now — unless the Democrats have become vastly more friendly to the interests of billionaires than they already are — how is the first Democratic non-incumbent to run in a Citizens United world possibly going to compete with right-wing billionaire cash?

“No Shit Sherlock” Judgement Against Sussex County Council’s Prayer Pracice

The Sussex County Council is its own worst enemy. Here is the table of contents from the plaintiff's argument.
I. The Sussex County Council’s practice of reciting the Lord’s Prayer before Council meetings is plainly unconstitutional A. The Lord’s Prayer is a distinctively Christian prayer B. Sectarian legislative prayers are unconstitutional C. Even under a more permissive minority view that allows individual sectarian prayers in some circumstances, the Council’s prayer practice unconstitutionally affiliates the Council with one particular religion D. The Council’s prayer practice also violates the Delaware Constitution

DBSR membership and other info

I've taken some inquiries on membership info for "Delaware Businesses for Social Responsibility," a business advocacy group dedicated to the proposition that business advocacy groups should advocate for more than tax cuts. Hit the jump for the details. If you are interested in joining in time to get the member rate for the ASBC business summit in Washington this June, let me know. Also, there will be a DBSR steering committee within the next two weeks. If you want to be involved with that email me at the email address located at the bottom of this post.
