Lydia York defeated the convicted state auditor by a roughly 2 to 1 margin. Â In addition to being a referendum on not having convicted criminals hold public office, this vote is widely seen as a repudiation of Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf who was a tenacious supporter of the convicted auditor.
Many believe that Schwartzkopf will be forced out of the leadership by his party caucus in a few weeks time.
