DL Open Thread Monday February 7 2022

Bad news for people who think Darwin will be decisive.

You may be wondering – Have the disproportionate COVID deaths in “red” areas been big enough to make a difference in future elections?

Even if the pandemic gets 100 times worse in terms of death numbers between now and November 2024, the excess Republican deaths would not be enough to flip a single red state.

The Facebook boycott being undertaken by Donviti is starting to bear fruit.  Probably not this week or even this year, but hopefully Facebook is done.

This guy’s take on February is spot on.

Hoping to be the first woman to complet ADT solo,  Briana DeSanctis, who set off from Cape Henlopen on Jan 1st passed through Maryland and is now in West Virginia taking some time off the trail to recover from shin splints.

Remember when Biden was elected and Coons promised a lot of cooperation by a secret cohort of Senate Republicans who were about to come out of hiding once Trump left DC?

Well,,,   It is now 420 days since Coons announced the formation of the super secret bipartisan caucus that was going to be a big player in the Biden years.  420 days of keeping their powder dry and waiting for the exact right time to reveal themselves to an astonished and grateful nation.

What are the real actual goals of Glorious Centrism anyway?

Aside from lower taxes for companies and people who already pay practically nothing, or some complicated tax rebate scheme carefully crafted to give the Chamber of Commerce a hard on, it is impossible to imagine what the Coosian dream of glorious centrism actually delivers.

I mean, what is the goal of Coons style bipartisanship?  Does he dream of an earth that is only modestly fucked up and inhabitable?   Or an America that is only rabidly racist on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s?  Does Coons favor Cops that only murder half of the black people they would have murdered in the absence of centrism?   I guess I just don’t get it.  There is no “moderate” platform I’ve ever heard Coons espouse.  It’s just “LIBERALS are bad. Impolite. Rude. Pushy”

Ok.  For the sake of argument.  Liberals are bad, rude & pushy.  What’s the moderate alternative?

The GOP is now an explicitly the pro-insurrection political party

The fact that the Republican National Committee  officially declared the January 6th insurrection and the conspiracy that preceded it as “legitimate political discourse” seems like a milestone.  It also seems like something Democrats should make known to voters.  I know making Republicans answer tough questions isn’t part of the Dems playbook, but this seems like a significant line has been crossed.
“Do you agree Republican National Committee’s position endorsing the violence to reject election results?”   is a question all Republicans need to be asked.
Of course, we’ll probably just end up with the with Coons going on the Sunday shows to let everyone know that he is  “gravely concerned.”  That’s something, I suppose.

“Bottom-Up Authoritarianism”

Super wealthy a-holes who want to be loved are the worst. Luckily they now have a term to describe their full victimhood at the hands of powerless peons who from time to time try to make them feel bad about saying and doing stupid, anti-social shit.

Would you change your party affiliation to vote for Mike Castle* in a GOP primary?

In order to save America and return the Republican Party to some semblance of sanity, Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R–Ill) is hoping you will become a Republican.

From ABC:

Experts suggest the practice, sometimes known as “party raiding,” will be hard to execute on a broad scale, but Kinzinger warned that failure to shift the GOP’s embrace of Trump could undermine democracy or even a lead to “failed state.”

“People need to wake up to that real possibility,” Kinzinger, who is not seeking reelection this fall, told The Associated Press. “We have to be able to have uneasy alliances, as uneasy as they may be in this moment.

Kinzinger’s plan underscores the extraordinary challenges Trump antagonists face as they fight to purge Trumpism from the GOP using the existing political system, which offers party leaders little control if voters line up behind extremists. At the same time, Trump allies control the Republican Party infrastructure at the state and national levels — in addition to fundraising.

Kinzinger’s new campaign is designed to attack the root of Trumpism where it’s spreading with little resistance: in the Republican nomination process. Because the vast majority of Republican-held congressional seats are not competitive due to gerrymandering and cultural trends, the congressman argues that Trump-backed “extremists” can only be stopped in the Republican primaries that decide which candidate appear on the general election ballot.

His group this week posted detailed instructions on its website [Country First] instructing Democrats and unaffiliated voters about how to participate in upcoming Republican primary elections.

*I used Mike Castle in the headline because I literally could not think of a single sane Republican that would be a viable statewide candidate.

Who is the Delaware Way Hack Being Snuck Into Fill Brady’s Lame Duck Term?

The RD4 committee looked around for an old white retired lump of Delaware Way mediocrity to fill Brady’s lame duck term and they are now pushing…wait for it…. Bud Freel.

Feel is favored by the committee star chamber over the districts’s consensus choice, Adriana Bohm.   A current Red Clay board member, college professor who is active in her community –  Bohm is missing one key credential.  She is not a Delaware Way lackey.

This lame duck term is bound to be eventful.  When LEBOR, tenets rights or legal weed end up in a close vote, the hidebound Dems know they can count on the old potato.

DL Open Thread – Wednesday Feb 2nd, Happy Ground Hog Day

6:00am  I wake up.  Sonny and Cher are singing “They say we’re young and we don’t know…” on my Panasonic clock radio.  I turn over and look out my frost-covered window.  I see the Democratic Party being run by fuckwits.  I see them picking the worst losers and corporatist douchebags to run in every fucking election.   I see those same corporatist douchebags trying to run on some complicated tax rebate scheme carefully crafted to win the approval of the Chamber of Commerce.   I see them wondering why their campaign is foundering.  I hear them yelling at me, “VOTE HARDER! or the terrible Republicans will WIN!! You awful liberal!!”

I see the terrible Republicans winning.  Over and over again, forever.  Happy Ground Hog Day!

DL Commenters who said that Biden was going to easily appoint the Supreme Court Justice of his choice are idiots. This guy had a stroke. And I still don’t think Manchin is a solid Dem vote.

You know why I hate Chris Coons so much?

It is because, more likely than not, Trump is going to be president again in less than three years.  Coons could give a fuck.  And when he does stir himself out of his slumber enough to give a fuck, it will be way too late.

All the elite political discourse in this country is in denial about where we’re heading. That is a huge problem.  It is a problem “leaders” could do something about like appearing on ‘Morning Joe’ and making a fuss, but Coons (for whatever reason) simply doesn’t give a fuck.   Neither does Carper.  They don’t fucking care.

And yes I said “I hate Chris Coons” which disqualifies me from talking about him according to the rules of polite society – but Jesus fucking Christ!!!   I have really come to hate that fucking useless shit-head.   – More or less via LGM

DL Open Thread Monday Jan 30 2022 – Two Year Anniversary of the First Mention of “coronavirus” on DL

On this date in 2020, Alby  mentioned the early flight cancelations to/from China in an open thread.  He also predicted super-spreader parties by the GOP’s brainiac vaccine deniers.  At the time he probably thought he was being outlandishly satirical.

I had a niece working in China for most of 2019. She came home for Christmas that year and around New Years Eve, I remember saying, “I don’t know if you’ll be going back to China.”  Being young, she wasn’t concerned and felt sure she was going back to China.

February was a blur for me, as my Mom died on the 8th (non-covid). I flew back and forth to Florida a couple of times. Nobody wore masks then. We were still a month away from the dumb fucking nitwit President saying that he wanted to keep cruise passengers on a cruise ship because it would “look bad” if coronavirus numbers went up.

By the Spring of 2020 dead bodies were being stored in refrigerated trucks parked outside of hospitals in New York, but in Delaware we had a spirit of solidarity around managing our exposure.  Republican assholes hadn’t galvanized their opposition to science yet.  As a country, we had survived the toilet paper shortages and were getting used to just sticking around the house. ‘Tiger King’ was released on Netflix on March 20, 2020 and quickly became a national obsession.

Seven days later, on March 27th, Trump signed the $2.2 trillion economic stimulus act which included the “Paycheck Protection Program” which made loans to businesses that were fully forgivable provided the borrowing business kept payrolls and head counts at February 2021 levels. Also, bars and restaurants were allowed to put tables and chairs outside. That was nice.

Then summer and then fall, and our college age son decided that zoom classes weren’t for him, so he looked in to taking a year off, and his program allowed him to take the year as long as he did some independent study.  He is good company.  We enjoyed having back home for that year.   But I felt terrible (and continue to feel terrible) for people with school age children. What a pain in the ass the past two years have been for them.

Then there was a bright spot. Biden/Harris beat Trump in the election and Dems picked up some house and senate seats. I thought Biden was going to be good at being President. So did he, apparently. Who could have predicted the Republicans would make his failure their key (and only, to be honest) goal? Other than everyone, who could possibly have predicted that?  They wrong footed him from the outset by not allowing a normal transition. They blocked him from filling key agency leadership posts – even ones related to fighting the pandemic.  Then 2021 became 2022 and Trump illegally tried to stay in power.  He is still is walking around free as a bird.

That was 2021. A shitty year.

Highlands Bunker – Seize the Moment (w/Adriana Bohm)

I haven’t listened yet but will be returning to the comments section to lay down my markets influencing 1-5 score on this pod.

Red Clay School Board Member Adriana Bohm joins Rob in the bunker to talk about the good of Carney’s new education plan for Wilmington, how Delaware schools have been handling the pandemic, and the bad of Carney’s new education plan for Wilmington.

Show Notes:

DART Bus Stop Improvements Benefit Residents of Wilmington’s 2nd District

DART, working with Wilmington Councilwoman Shané Darby, has completed several bus stop improvements in Wilmington’s 2nd District. Councilwoman Darby contacted DART last spring requesting improvements for the district’s most heavily used bus stops.

New bus shelters were installed along Market St. at 19th St. and opposite 20th St., on Washington St. at Concord Ave. and on 18th St. at Baynard Blvd. The new shelter installations, which include benches and solar lighting, will also receive weekly cleanings and trash removal. A new bench was also installed at the bus stop on Washington St. at 26th St. and another will be added on Washington St. at 30th St.

John Sisson, DTC’s Chief Executive Officer stated, “We know the importance of connecting people to their destinations, safely, and efficiently. Our team is continually looking for ways to improve the customer experience. By adding amenities to our bus stops such as shelters, benches and lighting, our riders are provided with a more comfortable waiting area to access their destinations.”
