The Ensign Plot Thickens

I figured the John Ensign affair scandal was just your regular, run-of-the-mill adultery scandal. Apparently it’s a lot more complicated than that. At one time, Ensign employed the woman, her husband and her son at the same time. Ensign also got a job for the woman’s husband with a campaign contributor.

Now there are two new revelations: Senator Tom Coburn knew about the affair at least back to early 2008 and the woman’s husband tried to get Fox News’ attention to Ensign’s behavior. The man, Doug Hampton wrote a letter to Megyn Kelly at Fox, asking for her help. I find it quite interesting that even though the Republicans knew about the affair, they still elected him to a leadership position in the party. Is their bench that shallow, or do affairs only matter is your name is Bill Clinton or John Edwards? Text of the letter is below the fold.

Open Thread: Racism Edition

All I can say about these links is OMG WTF.

From the South Carolina GOP, a Facebook update comparing Michelle Obama to an ape.

Rusty DePass, a prominent South Carolina Republican activist, is now apologizing for making a racist joke about Michelle Obama, and taken down the Facebook page where he made it — though he does make sure to shift the blame and say that Michelle started it.

DePass commented on a story about a gorilla escaping from a local zoo: “I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors – probably harmless.”

“I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone,” said DePass. “The comment was clearly in jest.”

Also from South Carolina, a racist “joke” about Barack Obama:

Indigo Journal, a liberal blog in South Carolina, reports that GOP operative Mike Green posted a racist joke about President Obama on his Twitter account over the weekend — and in a brief conversation with TPM, Green did not deny it. (Late Update: Green has now admitted it in a new set of Tweets, and apologized. See new section after the jump.)

Green posted this, then deleted it some time later:

JUST HEARD OBAMA IS GOING TO IMPOSE A 40% TAX ON ASPIRIN BECAUSE IT’S WHITE AND IT WORKS.

From Tennessee we get this charming story:

It’s a busy Monday, as one Republican official already got busted doing racist anti-Michelle Obama stuff on the Facebook, and now we’re learning about some super-funny racist emails sent out by a Tennessee GOP legislative staffer for Republican state senator Diane Black. Let’s meet the charming Sherri Goforth, who sent the image above to god knows how many people because, ha, a Negro in the White House?

Nashville Is Talking reports:

When I asked her if she understood the controversial nature of the photo, Goforth would only say she felt very bad about accidentally sending it to the wrong list. When I gave her a second chance to address the controversial nature of the email, she again repeated that she only felt bad about sending it to the wrong list of people.

“I went on the wrong email and I inadvertently hit the wrong button,” Goforth told NIT. “I’m very sick about it, and it’s one of those things I can’t change or take back.”

She’s sick she got caught, not that she sent the picture.
