The Polling Report [6.24.12]

Here are all the polls that have been released since our last polling report last Wednesday. As you can see, not much has changed. A close race nationally, save for that Bloomberg-Selzer poll that had the President winning in a landslide. Pew has Obama at 50, with a 4 point lead. Rasmussen, of course, has the mirror image, with Romney leading by 5 at 48%. The rest of the nationals are all 1 point leads or 2 point leads or outright ties. In the states, Wisconsin flips back to Lean Obama, and Michigan flips back to being a toss up. Iowa and Florida remain toss ups, and Washington stays Strong Obama, Nebraska stays strong Romney, and Montana still leans Romney. DLMAP

Incumbent John Atkins, who is equally adept at burning tires and burning bridges, has an opponent. No, DL loyalists, this isn't a cause for Bacchanalian revelry (something else with which John Atkins is reportedly not unfamiliar). His opponent is Richard G. Collins, Executive Director of the so-called 'Positive Growth Alliance', which of course, is dedicated to "Improving the Quality of Life Through Free Enterprise". Feel free to read the empty rhetoric. It's just a downstate spew of what Charles 'Bouvier de Flandres' Copeland puts forward upstate. In other words, dog whistles. With multimillionaire bucks behind them.

Add House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) to the list of high profile Democrats who are publicly accusing Republicans of intentionally undermining the economy in order to defeat President Obama. “There’s no intention on behalf of the Republicans in the House of Representatives to try to help the president move this country forward,” Hoyer told a small group of reporters in his Capitol office on Thursday morning. “I quote Jesse Jackson, who I thought said it best, there are a lot people in Washington who want to drown the captain and are prepared to sink the ship in order to do so.”

Been a tough couple of days. Unnecessary drama (with more than a touch of farce), next-to-no sleep, and a summer cold. Plus, I've got obligations and then work today. So, I'm gonna give you the raw materials, you can write today's Post-Game Wrap-Up/Pre-Game Show. Hey one of you could emerge as the next Lou Gehrig to my Wally Pipp. Which is likely the last baseball reference you'll see here for a long time.

Well known Delawarean environmental and peace activist Frieda Berryhill passed away today. She was well known in her efforts opposing nuclear power and weapons. She had turned 90 years old earlier this year. We are all a little less without her. I am going to post what appears to be an article about her that was posted on the UnplugSalem.org.

Contemptible Congress

When I was a wee lad, I had the utmost respect for Congress. I was in awe of my then Congressman, Byron Rodgers (D-Denver) who was the essence of a public servant. I was good friends with Congresswoman Pat Schroeder and Congressman & Senator Tim Wirth (who was a neighbor). That all changed after I moved to DC and began working for the government. I discovered that many of the 539 Members of Congress (including the delegates from DC, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands) didn't really give a damn about their constituents. It was all about getting face time on TV to make it seem as though they were doing something. This afternoon, Rep. Darrell Issa, chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, pushed through a resolution holding Attorney General Eric Holder in "Contempt of Congress." Better add my name to that resolution, Issa, because I hold you and the Teabag 112th Congress in the utmost contempt. Obstruction is the motto of this Congress.

An eating contest hero with a tragic flaw

In a world rife with injustice and poverty, eating contests are inherently despicable. Especially eating contests held in the United States, the greasy, bloated pig of nations. I've always given Philly's Wingnbowl a pass though.
