O’Donnell and Urquhart – Birds Of A Feather

What is it about these two and their fixation on the phrase separation of Church and State?

Today Christine actually made a debate audience gasp.

And who can ever forget Glenn’s stellar performance…

That video never gets old, and I’m thrilled Carney is using it.

There really isn’t a difference between Glenn and Christine, and that needs to be pointed out again, and again, and again.

Comment Rescue: Think 123 On Delaware Politics – Where Does O’Donnell Live?

While I won’t link to David Anderson’s House of Crazy, Think123 has been asking the same questions on every thread.  Needless to say, he has received no answers.  Notta one.

Do you know where O’Donnell was born, raised, went to school?  Do you know where she lives currently?  What year she became a Delaware resident.  Do her parents live in Delaware?  We need to hear some personal details. I can’t find anything.  What [do] you know?  Many of us are wondering how she survived with no income to speak of for ten years.

These are not unreasonable questions – they are basic.  Why are the answers such a secret?

Can anyone provide answers?

O’Donnell’s Questionable Campaign Spending Is Catching Up To Her

Via CNN:

A watchdog group says it plans to ask authorities in Delaware to investigate Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell’s finances.

At issue are more than $20,000 of spending in 2009 and 2010 that Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington claims was illegal.

“It turns out Miss O’Donnell has treated her campaign funds like they are her very own personal piggy bank. She’s used that money to pay for things like her rent, for gas, meals and even a bowling outing. And that’s just flat-out illegal,” said Melanie Sloan, the group’s executive director.

In an interview on CNN’s “AC360,” Sloan said her organization would be sending letters to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware and the Federal Elections Commission on Monday asking them to investigate.

“For example, in 2009, Miss O’Donnell wasn’t a candidate for anything, yet she had numerous campaign expenses, things like travel and gas, and yet she had no actual campaign,” Sloan said.

O’Donnell’s spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment.

O’Donnell’s spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment. Why, I’m shocked!

And, for those of you dying to paint this as a partisan witch hunt  (witch hunt – get it!) the group calling for the investigation is the same group that called for Rep. Charles Rangel, D-New York, to step down after allegations of ethics violations.

Walsh Leaves Office With Class

One of the upsets of the night was challenger Trinidad Navarro’s defeat of 30-year incumbent Sheriff Mike Walsh. We’ve reported several times that Walsh seemed to take the challenge as a personal insult. I guess we’re not going to see a kiss-and-make-up in this race.

Walsh, 72, has held the office since 1980, overseeing the distribution of court papers and administering real estate sales on foreclosures homes. He said he blames himself for the loss.

“My honest feeling is that I have severely let down the sheriff’s office, and I’ve let down the people of New Castle County to let the job of sheriff fall into his hands,” Walsh said. “I am ashamed of myself for allowing it to happen, although I worked hard.”

Classy!

A Word Of Warning

Delaware Liberal is about to get deluged. A Christine O’Donnell win means her crazed supporters are feeling powerful and now that Chris Coons is the one standing in the way of her annointment their eyes will turn to us. I don’t know how much you followed what happened on the Delaware Tomorrow blog but they practically had to shut down for a while because of harassment of O’Donnell supporters and one blogger was even driven off of the blog.

If you’re posting here under your name, I strongly suggest you use a pseudonym. Of course, this decision is up to you. Also, we will lower any tolerance for “outing” behavior. No more “you sound like X” or “I know where you live” type of statements. People need to come here to discuss things without worrying that political feuds are going to spill over into real life. Just be careful about revealing information about posters who you may know.

From The Mouths Of The “Big Boys” And “Little Girl”

Here’s a new twist to the victim card.  Sharron Angle says that Harry Reid is “trying to hit the girl.”

“It is also the corruption in Washington, DC that is characterized by Harry Reid, lets-make-a-deal cronyism, politics as usual, and so we’re saying dirty tricks Harry is up to his dirty tricks one more time and he’s just trying to hit the girl,” Angle said on the Alan Stock Show.

“You know, isolate that Sharron Angle, marginalize her and then demonize her,” she said in a separate appearance on the Heidi Harris Show. “And he has been doing that to me and what we need to do is say, ‘you know Harry, it’s not going to do you any good to hit the girl.’”

Spare me.  Also, what adult women refers to herself as a girl.  The kind looking for special treatment.

But Angle’s choice of words is especially relevant given Republicans have cited her gender as one of the many reasons they believe she has a good shot of defeating the Majority Leader. They point out that Reid has never had to face a woman before in a Senate race.

“Yes, Harry is going after the girl. He is attacking her, but that’s part of politics,” Smith added. “In polite society, you don’t attack the girl. We always wondered what would happen with Harry and his nastiness because some people would get upset if he’s mean to a woman.”

Um, okay.  So they think her gender is an advantage because… in polite society, you don’t attack the girl?  Yeah, I noticed how well Republicans lived these principles when it came to Hillary.

What’s A Voter To Do?

I honestly have no idea what will end up happening in November, but these numbers aren’t promising for anyone.

52% of the undecideds in the Senate race disapprove of President Obama to 35% who like the job he’s doing. They don’t think much of the Democrats in Congress either- only 26% have a like the job they’re doing.

Those numbers might seem bad- but they pale in comparison to how negatively those voters feel about Congressional Republicans- only 10% approve of the job they’re doing while 61% disapprove. So these voters are down on President Obama and the Democratic majority- but their most negatives feelings are toward the Republican minority.

These are folks who normally would vote to ‘throw the bums out.’ But they think the alternative is even bigger bums. It’ll be interesting to see how folks like this across the country end up voting this fall- and it could determine whether Democrats keep control of the House and a healthy majority in the Senate or not.

Only 10% approve of Congressional Republicans?  I was feeling a little blue until I saw those numbers.

Crist Pulls Ahead In The Polls

I’ve been watching Florida very closely mainly because it’s one of the most prominent tests the Tea Party will face.  And while a lot can happen until the election this can’t be good news for the “purge the moderates” group.

Gov. Charlie Crist has a large lead in the three-way race to the be the next Senator from Florida, a new poll found this weekend. The poll, conducted for the Florida Chamber of Commerce, shows Crist with a double-digit lead over both of his opponents in the general election, likely Republican nominee Marco Rubio and Democrat Kendrick Meek.

The poll, fielded by Republican pollster Cherry Communications, shows Crist with 42% of the vote, Rubio with 31% and Meek with 14%. The poll was conducted June 9-13 among 607 likely voters and has a margin of error of 4%.

Uh oh.

As far as I’m concerned, I want Crist to win – and win big.  Not because I like Crist, but rather because the Tea Party’s 15 minutes is up.  They really need to be put in perspective.

Breaking: Sen. Evan Bayh to Retire

Here’s the Washington Post report.

Bayh was a DINO who never took a bold position on anything, unlike his father, Birch Bayh, who was an early opponent of the Vietnam War.

The money (literally & figuratively) quote:

“After all these years, my passion for service to my fellow citizens is undiminished, but my desire to do so by serving in Congress has waned,” Bayh will say.

What’s the over/under on how soon his lobbying career begins? My prediction: It already has.

Polling: In Which We Find Republicans Still Have a Problem

It is fair to note that this poll shows a pretty toxic environment for both parties, but it seems clear that if you are a Congressional Dem, you have abit of an edge to build from. And if you are a Congressional repub, the massive media spin (and media lock) isn’t exactly getting you alot of traction. Not yet, at least.

The poll is a new NYT/CBS News Poll that was released this week. Some highlights:

  • The top issues facing America ranked by responders include: Jobs – 27%, Economy – 25%, Health Care 13%. The only other issue in the double digit range is Other;
  • 8% say members of Congress deserve re-election;
  • 31% say BushCo was responsible for the current state of the economy, 23% say Wall Street is, 13% say Congress is and only 7% say the Obama administration is responsible;
  • 41% blame the Bush admin for the current deficit problem; 24% blame Congress for it; only 7% blame the Obama administration for it;
  • To reduce the deficit:
    • 62% would not be willing to reduce spending on health care or education
    • 45% would be willing to reduce military spending, while 51% would not be willing
  • 56% say that Mr. Obama does not have a plan to create jobs;
  • 55% approve of the way that Mr. Obama is handling terrorism;
  • 56% want smaller government; 59% thought it was doing too much;
  • 62% support an end to tax cuts for the wealthy;
  • 78% say government is run by a few big special interests;
  • 80% thought Congress was more interested in serving special interests than the people they represent;
  • 60% said the President understood their problems, 42% thought the same about Congressional Democrats and 35% for Congressional Republicans;
  • 62% said Mr. Obama was trying to work with Congressional Republicans, while 62% said that Republicans were not trying to work with Mr. Obama;
  • 74% said Republicans should compromise more;
  • 50% said the Senate should change the filibuster rules to require a simple majority to pass legislation;
  • Clear majorities of Americans favor allowing gay men and lesbians to serve openly in the military but the way the question is worded makes a very big difference in the level of support: 75% Support Gays Openly Serving In Military; 66% Think It’s Discrimination To Not Allow It;
  • Only 18% of responders are supporters of the Tea Party movement.

I don’t think you can overstate how toxic this environment is to anybody in the Federal government right now.  But there is a pretty clear hierarchy of approval/good will here and President Obama is at the top of that hierarchy for now.  Why congressional Democrats don’t take advantage of that — and help themselves and Obama — is a real mystery to me.
