It’s time to be lied to

Tired of hearing the grim truth about their economic future, Americans demanded that the bald-faced lies resume immediately, particularly whenever politicians feel the need to divulge another terrifying problem with Wall Street, the housing market, or any one of a hundred other ticking time bombs everyone was better off not knowing about.

In addition, citizens are requesting that the phrase, “It will only get worse before it gets better,” be permanently replaced with, “Things are going great. Enjoy yourselves.”

“I thought I wanted a new era of transparency and accountability, but honestly, I just can’t handle it,” Ohio resident Nathan Pletcher said. “All I ever hear about now is how my retirement has been pushed back 15 years and how I won’t be able to afford my daughter’s tuition when she grows up.”

“I know when he’s telling the truth, and it bothers me,” recently laid-off schoolteacher Mary Hanover said of Obama. “He gets this serious expression on his face and says things like, ‘This is the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.’ Who needs to hear that? For Christ’s sake, smile a bit and say we just found a diamond mine under Montana that’s going to pay for everything. I’ll believe you.”

Deep Swine Flu Thought

1) Thank God Barack Obama is the President and not some idiot Republican.

2) As the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) takes steps to deal with this crisis, the DHHS cabinet secretary confirmation is being held up by Republican abortion ideologues.

Thanks Republicans!

A View From The Lofty Perch of Sanity

The Wilmington Delaware Riverfront was host to one of the four “TEA” Parties going on in the state. It was nothing more than a two and a half hour therapy session that had Republican speaker after Republican speaker yap and complain about spending, socialism and pork. One after another they proved they know nothing about economics and have the memory of a gnat. The incoherent ramblings poked fun at Obama, mocked the Democrats and cried about the end of the world now that socialism was at hand. All this has been diagnosed in just over 90 days. The past 8 years never happened and the past 90 days confirmed what they already know and the rest of the world doesn’t: Obama is a Socialist. The Democrats are crooks too. Congress should be impeached and we should “Legalize the Constitution” (whatever the heck that means). Democrats also spend money like a sailor on leave. Oh and don’t forget that Socialism is scary and it’s coming (or is already here and has already destroyed the republic even though the republic must still stand since I am protesting to save it). Yes indeed, this was therapy at its best. Bitter and clinging every step of the way.

The one problem with this therapy session is there was no counselor to pat them on the knee and tell them their phobias are illegitimate. The nattering naybobs of negativity found their home today and couldn’t have been happier to be mired in their own cult of misinformation. Overwhelmingly white and bitter they clutched dozens of signs which simply denounced everything from abortion to congress without offering any possible avenues that their pain could be eased except through more complaining.

The bright part of the show came when a College Republican said that at this rate of spending there would be no Social Security for him. The “harrumphing” and “here! here’ing” quickly followed that statement. But, then as you looked around the crowd you couldn’t help but laugh at the Social Security recipients holding up their signs in support of capitalism and damning socialism. The hypocritical statements flew out of their mouths’ faster than the $5 “Pork Sandwiches” they were selling at the door.

If that wasn’t enough our own minor league version of Rush Limbaugh took roll call and asked people to identify if they were an Republicans or Democrats. “Don’t be afraid to say what party you are. Don’t be embarrassed!” As they laughed they started chanting some vacuous battle cry that the radio host was leading. As he ended his speech he asked them to not stop. “Keep at it!” he begged. “This is just the beginning. We have to keep on them.” The heads bobbed up and down like three years olds watching the Teletubbies. Keep at what? Who knew. Just keep at it.

All in all, in Delaware, it was just a way for the losing team to vent and invent new conspiracies and network with other rudderless dingies. But the symbolism of the day was completely lost on these people. The “TEA” Party was held in an abandoned, unrented former retail space that has been empty since the November elections. Oh? Who last rented out the space? The winning Democratic candidate for Governor, Jack Markell.

Teabagging Day! Bet They Wish They Had Thought of Loose Tea

teabaggin_med

Now, it is also Tax Day, so make sure that you have completed your Taxes and sent them in before you get involved with any Teabagging activities.  Somehow I don’t think that the IRS will take your Teabagging Events as a serious reason to not file.  So here we go:

This is what these guys are protesting today:

galluptaxes2009

48% of Americans think that the amount they pay in taxes is about right — and while this is the most positive tax survey that Gallup has taken, it is pretty clear that folks have been moving to that position for awhile.  I’m not sure of this is a question of coming to terms with paying for the government you want (in direct opposition to the wingnut you can have allthe government you want for free — just not the social safety net stuff), but this is looking like we are growing up abit.

So how many teabags do they have to throw in the water to counteract this?

The there’s this:

gallupeconapproval40909

Now I’m not going to do what our local rookie leaguers do and pretend that these polls are the final answer to anything.  They aren’t.  It is tough to argue with the tax trend, though and these approval ratings can change in a flash.  But as today’s bit of political theater, the Teabaggers have a real uphill climb here.  Even though they will speak as though most Americans want the current trajectory to change, they really don’t.  Which shouldn’t be too much of a surprise, since most Americans voted for Obama and they still want him to succeed.  Our Teabaggers basically want to rerun the election, which doesn’t look possible today given the current attitudes.

So here we go.  I know that the Huffington Post will be liveblogging some of the events and as we discover more venues we’ll post them here.  Are you hearing or reading any news from any of these events today?  Document it here….

President Obama’s Rather Remarkable Address

I’ve been trying to think of what to say about Barack Obama’s economic speech today and have decided not to say anything except to tell you all to read it. The whole thing. Even though it’s long. It is not inspiring, except for the fact that the President of the United States is speaking to us all as adults. It is not a persuasive speech, but rather a explanation. The President is telling us the reasoning behind what his administration will be doing in his first term and why they will be doing it. He explains why they do not want to nationalize the bailed out banks, and why deficit spending is necessary in their view. He narrates the chain of events that led to this crisis and explains why “health care reform is entitlement reform.”

Here is the speech below the fold.

Countdown — One More Day Until the World’s Biggest Teabagging

One more day until the big event — and one more day to ponder the sheer hypocrisy of these tea party events.  One of the things I notice over the past week or ten days is how fast the folks trying to put this on are trying to re-spin the purpose of this thing.  They are trying really hard to downplay the crazy, make this look like a bi-partisan thing, restate the purpose to protest spending rather than taxes and of course, to plump up their more-patriotic-than-thou cred.  And very much like the guy who wrote the article below, I really want these people to explain where the hell they were when BushCo and the Republican Congress were busily burning down the house.  But now that someone is trying to put out the fire and rebuild, they want to stop all of that in favor of — what, exactly?  Even they don’t know.  More news of the crazy, but first DV wants to know what you would ask the teabaggers if you could.  News:

  • Where were these Teabaggers during the Bush years?
  • Which leads to me wonder: where in the f*ck were these protesters during the administration of George W. Bush?

Bush, as you’ll recall, inherited a $128 billion budget surplus from Bill Clinton when he took office in 2001. Bush quickly squandered that and then proceeded to rack up gigantic budget deficits every year of his two terms in office.

Under Bush, the national debt grew by more than $4 trillion: the biggest debt increase of any president in U.S. history.

When Bush took office in 2001, the national debt stood at $5.7 trillion. At the end of Bush’s two terms, the debt had skyrocketed to more than $9.849 trillion. And remember: Bush enjoyed a Republican Senate and House of Representatives during most of his time in office.

Things weren’t helped along any by Bush’s illegal and totally unnecessary Iraq War. That disaster will probably wind up costing the U.S. $3 trillion. It would be nice if some of these Tea Party protesters asked for an immediate halt to the $10 billion a month that America continues to squander in Iraq every month to this day. But I suspect there won’t be too many “Stop the Iraq War” signs at these Tea Party events.

Like I said, where were these “tea party” protesters during the Bush years? Where were they when Bush was handing out billions of our tax dollars to his wealthy friends? Where were they when Dick Cheney’s former company, Halliburton, was pocketing billions of dollars in closed, no-bid contracts? Where were they when $12 billion in cash disappeared without a trace after it was shipped to Iraq?

Obama has only been in office a few months. He inherited the worst economy since the Great Depression.

    Read the Whole Thing.

  • Via Teablogging — Cryin’ Glenn Beck is backing out of being the keynote speaker at the San Antonio Teabagging.  (And Teablogging is also one of the homebases of the Teabag Infiltration Teams [TITs] reporting incognito from the teabaggings…)
  • Historical Resonance FAIL — Lawyers, Guns and Money reports on a bit of weirdness from a Nebraska teaparty as celebrated by the Instapundit:

Hundreds of Nebraskans chanted no taxation without representation in protest of increased government spending spawned by the stimulus bill at the state capitol Saturday.

As they go on to note, Nebraskans certainly do have plenty of representation and most of these chanters got tax cuts. Matt Yglesias reads this and points out that every citizen of DC pays plenty of taxes and they really do have no representation. Do you think that we can get Nebraska ACORN to circulate petitions among the Nebraska teabaggers to support the DC folks getting some representation in Congress? While you’re at it, don’t miss Instaputz’ flashback to Why Dems Will Lose in 2006.

Monday’s Open Thread

Today’s a traveling day for me, but if you’re looking for inspiration check out DV’s imagine if you changed one word post here, DelawareDem’s posts and insightful analysis here and here, ‘Bulo’s whale of a tale here as well as his thought provoking post about Lincoln, and Jason’s Republicans are the butt of the joke here.  And then there’s always Cassandra’s…

Two days until tea parties!

Walking the Walk: Feds to Purchase Fuel-Efficient Cars from U. S. Companies

‘Bulo hates to link to the charlatans at CNBC, but that’s where he found this story.

Granted, it’s a small drop in the bucket, and granted, in some ways, it’s a symbolic gesture, but still this policy provides legitimate assistance to the auto companies, reduces gasoline consumption, and sets an example for people to buy fuel-efficient cars:

President Barack Obama, saying he was committed to a strong U.S. auto industry, announced on Thursday that the government would purchase 17,600 new fuel-efficient vehicles from American automakers by June 1.

Obama said the vehicles, part of the U.S. government fleet, would be purchased from General Motors , privately held Chryslerand Ford , all of which had an existing contract with the federal government’s General Services Administration.

The president said the GSA would spend about $285 million in funds from the $787 billion dollar Recovery Act approved by Congress earlier this year to buy the 17,600 commercially available fuel-efficient vehicles.

“As a part of our commitment to the American auto industry, I charged my administration with using Recovery Act funds to purchase a new fleet of fuel-efficient government vehicles to increase demand for our American auto companies and stimulate the economy,” Obama said in a statement announcing the decision.

The announcement on Thursday includes the purchase of 2,500 hybrid sedans that will be ordered by April 15, the largest one-time purchase of hybrid vehicles for the government fleet in history, the White House said.

Swapping older federal cars for hybrids and fuel-efficient vehicles will reduce gasoline consumption by 1.3 million gallons per year and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 26 million pounds, the White House said.

Well, the Beast Who Slumbers despises the phrase ‘a win-win situation’. So, ‘bulo would like to know from his loyal reader(s): Is there any way that this is not a win-win situation? Muchas gracias in advance.

My Response II

Dave continues to deny that his rhetoric has downstream consequences. My response to his response is here in case anyone wants to comment, but would rather not have to deal with DelawarePolitics.

Dave,

You made a choice when you posted the on the “sovereignty” issue. You chose to be a part of a right-wing fear mongering campaign for whatever reason. Only you know if you really think states should feel threatened by Obama or if it was just political posturing.

You could have made another choice and I wish you had.

Anyway, you need to live with your choice however you can. If the way you want to live with it is by attacking me, so be it.

The facts speak clearly in this matter. The shooter used your justification to murder. I’m not saying he read it here. I’m saying that you, Dave, are part of a machine that has no conscience.
