A Lethal Mixture: Science and the Radical Right

Earlier this month Alabama’s à la Rob wrote about a new “textbook” for homeschoolers, Facts, Nor Fear: Teaching Children About The Environment. It’s really not humorous when non-scientists delve into science.

It is valuable as a model of propaganda technique in general, and of anti-regulatory rhetorical strategies in particular. Its method mostly consists of amassing anecdotes, omitting unfriendly evidence (while preaching about respect for “science”), and keeping strict silence about topics that cannot be easily spun. There’s not a peep about toxic or nuclear waste, for instance, or about human health problems stemming from pollution.

This “textbook” is so off the wall that it credited the Bald Eagle’s comeback, not to the banning of DDT, but to “a surge in American patriotism”. This is why children are not allowed to play with matches.

A few weeks later, à la Rob followed up with Hitler, Stlain and Rachel Carson?

Now I find that Aaron Swartz has the back story to a bizarre right-wing version of recent history, in which DDT is good for us, banning it has killed poor little innocents in Africa (via malaria), and Rachel Carson is the moral equivalent of Hitler.

When the Radical Right delves into subjects that are out of their expertise, the results would be laughable if not for the serious misinformation that they pass on: think Teagbagging, Creationism and Global Warming. Now their bashing environmental science. Just another example of why children are told not to run with scissors.

That’s Saul, Folks

Turns out the RNC did not have much a choice when they elected Grandmaster Steele. Michigan Liberal points us to this ditty from Saul Anuzis, former Michigan Republican Party chair and opponent to Steel for the RNC chair:

We’ve so overused the word ‘socialism’ that it no longer has the negative connotation it had 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago. Fascism — everybody still thinks that’s a bad thing.

When fascism doesn’t stick as socialism and liberalism didn’t, you might want to try one of these other ism’s: environmentalism, illegalism, radical feminism, ultraliberalism, social liberalism, African socialism, Arab nationalism, Black nationalism, secularism, state atheism, fabianism, evolutionary socialism, African socialism, Arab socialism, communism, revolutionary socialism, eurocommunism, Leninism, Maoism, Marxism, Marxism-Leninism, Marxist feminism, Marxist humanism, neo-marxism, Stalinism, Titoism, and Trotskyism.

But, please stick with your own ism for awhile: Failism.

Jindal’s Belief in Hogwash

Since we are celebrating the 200th annivesarty of Charles Darwin’s birth, it’s time to bring this video clip back to the forefront. Gov. Bobby Jindal, a Republican minion favorite, supports the teaching of Intelligent Design in direct contrast to our Constitution as seen in the Kitzmeiller v. Dover Area School District et. al decision (pdf).

Forget for the moment about Jindal’s taste for the occasional exorcism or love of earmarks (14th overall while a Congressman), his belief alone in Intelligence Design and his subsequent dismal of the U. S. Constitution, Bobby Jindal should not be considered a good Republican.

Wait, maybe he’s the perfect Republican . . .  at least it appears that the Radical Right bloggers over a Delaware Politics think so.

DE GOPers Start Getting Their Hate On

Republicans for Voldemort

Earlier in the week, I sent a note off to the Lt. Governor regarding my concerns about eminent domain which was ready to go to the Senate floor. Lt. Gov. Matt Denn was quickly responded and was kind enough to let me publish his response in Eminent Domain: Nemski’s Letter and Denn’s Response.

Even though I did not agree with Denn’s position, I understood it, but more importantly applaud his and Gov. Markell’s continued path to transparency in government. Evenly more important, Markell said he would sign the bill as is if it made it to his desk and Denn said he would vote for the legislation if he needed to.

But that doesn’t stop, the wingnuts does it? Denn was accused of having “logic completely backwards” or that “powerful forces” were using jobs as scare tactics. One commentator here thought that Denn looked “silly” after the Senate passed the bill. One blogger even called the city government of Wilmington, “fascist”. Another blogger inferred that the current administration thinks that property rights are a “luxury”.

First and foremost, what these wingnut bloggers fail to understand is that Delaware is a one-party state. The Republicans and their splinter party hold virtually no power in Delaware, so it is up to the Democrats to open their tent to different concerns regarding any legislation.

Listening and rethinking policy is what the new breed of Democratic leadership is doing. On small scale, we can see that with Denn and eminent domain, and on a larger stage, we see it with President Obamaa as he works to pass the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

But winguts, continue to cover your ears and stomp your feet, because that is what you do best.

Republicanism, Alabama Style

Here is a name from the not-so-recent past, Judge Roy Moore and he is thinking about running for governor of Alabama, reports countrycat in Left in Alabama.

Moore?  You might remember him as the Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court and the battle over the Ten Commandments Memorial in the Alabama state courthouse. There were press reports and  a court case which ended up with a U.S. federal judge telling Moore to remove the religious memorial (pdf). He refused to do so and was subsequently removed from the bench by the Alabama Court of the Judiciary. The memorial was removed as well.

Moore ran for governonr in Alabama in 2006 and lost in the primary to the incumbent, Gov. Bill Riley. Besides Moore being the current chairman of the Foundation for Moral Law, he is also a poet and not a very good one at that.

In the poem The Faded Black Book an old weary man is walking down a street until two hooligans beat him down and robbed him but only to find a faded black book.

“That little black book,” the old man said,
“It may be faded and old.
But the things you will find written within,
Are worth more than silver and gold.”

The thugs berate the old man and his “book”, only for the old man to warn his attackers of a band of thieves that lie await ahead. The old man offers to show his two attackers a different way.

“Well, old man,” said one of the youths,
“I’ve never really thought of things so.
And if you don’t mind we will go your way,
Perhaps more of this book we should know.”

Arrghh! Is this what the Republican Party has to offer in response to overwhelming defeat in November, bad poetry and a religious zealot whose claim to fame is defying the US Constitution.

Wouldn’t the Alabama Republican Party be better off with this guy who was recently arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated because he was rushing across town to get a blow job?

The Ground IS Shifting!

Nashville rejected the English Only Referendum today!

For English Only — 32,144 (44%)
Against English Only — 41,752 (56%)
From Enclave:
I expect nothing but contrition in any response from Eric Crafton, whose mantra while pursuing this expensive special election was “‘We the People’ have a right to vote on this matter.” Well, he should have been more careful about what he asked for.  He has now caused this city to spend $500,000 to get us right back to the place we were before he started blowing hard. For shame!
Congratulations to the people of Nashville! Wait, this post needs one more exclamation point  ! , there we’re done.

Deep Thought of the Day

The Radical Right is all over the Employee Free Choice Act (EFAC) because they are worried about taking away workers’ rights. Really? This is what you’re going to go with here, Republicans looking out for the welfare of the working man and woman.

Okay, I’ve stopped laughing, have you? So the Radical Right’s opposition to EFAC has nothing to do with union busting? Because  the history of the Rebpublican Party has been one for the destruction of labor unions which is decidedly anti-worker.

¿Hablas inglés?

Now, I’m not an expert on Nashville, I know it for its music both good and bad, and I’m no expert on Tennessee either, I know it for its barbecue and auto racing. So trying to make a big pronouncement about the people of Nashville and its environs regarding the passage later today of the English Only Referendum would be silly as well as ignorant.

But as the nation takes a step forward, Nashville and Davidson County will take a big step backward at the end of today as they will pass a referendum to make English the official language of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County.
