This is timely. Listen to Dave Burris declare some serious class warfare. I really love it when he calls union members “upper-middle-class construction workers.” Priceless. He might as well wear a vest with dollar signs all over it like the Monopoly board guy. Or maybe FSP really stands for “Flatulent Self-serving Plutocrats”.

Bachmann: I’m ‘Proud’ That ‘We Have People Working Two Jobs’ And ‘Longer Hours’

bacch.jpg

Topping Congress’s agenda as it returns this week is a plan to “jump-start the economy and try to shorten the slowdown that many economists say has already begun to take hold.”

Today, Rep. Eric Cantor (VA), the chief deputy Republican whip in the House, unveiled his proposal to stimulate the economy. His legislation — the so-called Middle Class Job Protection Act — does nothing for the middle class. Instead, it reduces the corporate tax rate by 25 percent.

At a press conference today unveiling the stimulus proposal, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) justified the conservative plan to give tax breaks to corporations — instead of working Americans — by arguing that people actually like working long hours:

I am so proud to be from the state of Minnesota. We’re the workingest state in the country, and the reason why we are, we have more people that are working longer hours, we have people that are working two jobs.

When Mom and Dad are both working two jobs it promotes family values becasue those troublesome dinner table squabbles are avoided.

  1. Whoever YOU want it to be says:

She’s had way too much Kool Aid and she looks likes she frequents MN meth labs (or finances them…now there’s an earmark).

  2. anon says:

A Republican plan to jump-start the economy is like OJ Simpson’s plan to resuscitate Ron and Nicole.

  3. This woman is fucking nuts. She’s only been in Congress like a year or so and there’s already a great blog dedicated to bringing her down. I learned about her via my syndicate — Newstex. Here’s a link to the Dump Michelle Bachmann blog. Apparently, she’s only in Congress to see that homos aren’t allowed to marry.

    This is your right-wing.

  4. jason330 says:

Mike that’s for the link to thaty blog. I loved this comment:

While Congresswoman Bachmann was beaming with pride earlier today, proud that many of us get to work 12-16 hour days, at 2 separate jobs, just to make ends meet, 190 St Cloud employees got laid off from Electrolux.

    Yeah Republicanism!

  5. David says:

High corporate rates are killing us. Even the socialists in Europe have finally gotten it. We now have the 2nd highest corporate tax rates in the world. We need to stop forcing jobs overseas and allow American companies an even shot.

  6. jason330 says:

    You are kidding I hope.

  7. George says:

This is my greatest beef with the GOP… they have no problems making cuts, as long as it’s at the bottom. Social security dependents, kids trying to get college loans, etc., etc.,…

Yes, the TTF is in trouble… but there are SO many reasons that are higher than some construction workers making a decent wage.

Frankly, the DelDOT screwed themselves by hiring outside consultants to do things they just have done in-house. These white collar, truly upper-middle-class privateers were paid huge sums to do very little work.

Of course since they are the “private sector”, Dave doesn’t want to touch them… even though they make their bucks off the public dole.

    Right idea, wrong target Dave.

  8. Dana Garrett says:

Dave Burris actually said today on WDEL that someone making $40,000 a year was upper middle class. I have a recording if it.

These Repubs are so so desperate to redefine the wage classifications because their policies have made a huge gap in wage disparities. In order to conceal that they are desperate to lower the standards for what upper class, upper- & lower- middle class, lower class so that they can simply reduce the numbers of the poor and increase the numbers of the lower & upper middle & upper classes and “lose” the problem merely through redefinition.

  9. Paul says:

    Dana,
    WTF did you just say????
    >>> In order to conceal that they are desperate to lower the standards for what upper class, upper- & lower- middle class, lower class so that they can simply reduce the numbers of the poor and increase the numbers of the lower & upper middle & upper classes and “lose” the problem merely through redefinition.<<<

    Step away from the keyboard…..

Or as Nixon might have said it, “what you think I typed is not what you read, and is not what I meant…”

    What do you mean?

Even Bill Clinton would have trouble Parsing this one.
    .

  10. anon says:

Uncle Dana gets that way sometimes. We know what he meant.

  11. Dorian Gray says:

    “upper-middle-class construction workers”

Awesome! What year is it again, 1905? Corporations are taxed too much. Boo fucking hoo. Perhaps if the top executives didn’t get paid upwards of $10,000,000 per year plus stock and bonus. But that’s just their incentive too work real hard under our capitalist system, right. Then when they get sacked for utter failure they pick up another $25,000,000 or so.

  12. disbelief says:

I’m surprised Protack doesn’t have an opinion on this, especially after senior airline manangement paid for their jobs with his retirement funds.

  13. FSP says:

I’m just using John Edwards’ definition of middle-class.

If any of you can convince me that someone making in excess of $100,000 per year is middle-class, I’ll cease using the word “upper” in this conversation.

  14. FSP says:

“Frankly, the DelDOT screwed themselves by hiring outside consultants to do things they just have done in-house. These white collar, truly upper-middle-class privateers were paid huge sums to do very little work.

Of course since they are the “private sector”, Dave doesn’t want to touch them… even though they make their bucks off the public dole.”

I’ve publicly stated my opposition to the consultants that DelDOT uses a number of times. So that’s not true. But that number, which is about $60 million over 5 years, pales in comparison to artificially fixing the wages of construction workers to the tune of $100 million per year.

  15. FSP says:

And despite the best efforts of many of you, this isn’t about unions or corporations. In fact, non-union labor benefits more from PW than union labor.

This is about all of you choosing to invest $100 million of public money in artificially fixing the wages of workers where I think we should invest it in bus service for poor people on Sundays, new schools and more teachers.

  16. Bad figures on DelDOT consultants, Dave?
I heard that the year before Hayward left, the price tag on consultants was 100 million, for that one year.

  17. FSP says:

It’s much lower now. I have the list if you’d like me to email it to you.

  18. anon says:

senior airline manangement paid for their jobs with his retirement funds.

You are just envious of success.

  19. Dana Garrett says:

Uncle Dana must have been really messed up when he wrote it. Here’s what I meant:

“In order to conceal [the huge disparities in income created by their policies] [Republicans] are desperate to lower the standards for what [constitutes] upper class, upper- & lower- middle class, [and] lower class, so they can simply reduce the numbers of the poor and increase the numbers of the lower & upper middle & upper classes and “lose” the[ir] [redistribution] problem merely through redefinition.

  20. Dana Garrett says:

“I’m just using John Edwards’ definition of middle-class.”

Where does Edwards say that a worker making $40,000 a year is upper-middle class?

  21. Whoever YOU want it to be says:

FSP….do something practical research: Starting February 1 keep your family budget at $3,300.00 or less for the next six months ($40,000.00 per annum)….Let us know if you can live as an ‘upper middle class’ wage earner. We await your initial report starting March 1.

  22. liz allen says:

How many in Delaware are making $40,000 a year. The majority make far less and raising a family! They are now into their credit cards which is the next biggest scandal, following the housing crisis! And no FSP, Edwards never said that…if you can prove otherwise…please do!

Edwards talked about a family of four living on $40,000 a year….who can’t pay for health care and who sinking into poverty everyday!

  23. Von Cracker says:

Love the photo! Looks like she’s taking one for the team. 😉

  24. jason330 says:

Median family income in Delaware for a married couple is $76,288.

So $40k must be very close to the personal median. The thing to remeber is that it is a median, so every Gary Stockbridge there are 25 or 30 people feeling luck to crack into the mid twenties.

  25. FSP says:

How much do you think I make a year?

  26. jason330 says:

    Not Gary Stockbridge money.
