I had almost forgotten about Nader

Filed in National by on June 25, 2008

Until he said this about Obama.

“He wants to show that he is not a threatening . . . another politically threatening African-American politician. He wants to appeal to white guilt. You appeal to white guilt not by coming on as black is beautiful, black is powerful. Basically he’s coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it’s corporate or whether it’s simply oligarchic. And they love it. Whites just eat it up.”

Spoken like a true “white” guy.
What is it about this election season that’s bringing out the stupid?

Now I’m not saying race isn’t a factor in this election, but, come on, the black is beautiful and black power slogans are so not groovy anymore.
Actually, what I believe we’re seeing is the changing of the guard, or, if you’d prefer, the extinction of political dinosaurs. I’m beginning to feel sorry for these old cats.

Good Lord! Did you know that snarfing coffee through your nose is kinda painful to the sinuses? Argh, white shirt, too! Dang it! Dang you, Nader!

If Nader thinks that’s the only support Obama has from we Clorox types (sorry, I had to go to Nader’s level), he’s an ignoramus. Oh, wait, he is one, isn’t he?

  2. cassandra m says:

    This slays me:

I haven’t heard him have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos. Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What’s keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn’t want to appear like Jesse Jackson?

So, Ralph, get Jesse Jackson as your running mate, and you apparently have a platform here. Except that the business of Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos and lead are not unique to the black community. They are problems for poor and low income communities all across America (we need John Edwards to school this fool, I think.) Have mercy.

And what is this talking white crap?

  3. Delaware Dem says:

Nader is just a pathetic figure now. His last geniune accomplishment occurred more than 30 years ago.

  4. Von Cracker says:

His ego is a major reason why we’re where we are today.

    Geesh…what a loon.

  5. Rebecca says:

They call it the silly season for a reason. Nader is just tragic.

  6. No Name for Privacy says:

    Edwards for A.G.

  7. pandora says:

Edwards as AG is fine with me. Can we put Nader in charge of lava lamps?

  8. Delaware Dem says:

No, Nader would break the lava lamps.

  9. cassandra m says:

We could just put Nader in whatever Smithsonian exhibit has a Corvair in it.

  10. pandora says:

The sad thing… Nader has made himself irrelevant.

  11. Brian says:

Nader will not make an impact…..

  12. delawaredem says:

True. Actually, he and Barr together hurt McCain more, according to the most recent polls. Obama was leading McCain 49-37, without the third party candidates, and he leads McCain 48-33 with the third party candidates included.

  13. cassandra m says:

And I suspect that the closer we get to the general, the less of an impact Barr will have as repubs who were thinking of voting for him change their minds.

  14. Al Mascitti says:

TOP TEN WAYS AMERICAN CARS WOULD BE DIFFERENT IF RALPH NADER HAD NEVER BEEN BORN

    10. Dashboard hibachis
    9. Seat belts made out of piano wire
    8. Windshield replaced with ant farm for the kids
    7. Strobe headlights make oncoming traffic look like an old-time movie
    6. 50-foot antennas allow you to broadcast while driving
    5. Optional front-seat hammocks
    4. Wiper fluid reservoir routinely filled with Thousand Island dressing
    3. New York City taxis would be exactly the same
    2. The paper Buick
    1. Speedometer replaced with electronic voice chanting “Punch it! Punch it!”

    Cut and pasted without permission.

  15. delawaredem says:

“50 foot antennas that allow you to broadcast while driving…”

I have that now. And when I press the gas pedal down to the floor, Patrick Stewart’s voice fills the cabin, saying “Engage!”

  16. Steve Newton says:

I disagree on Barr; if Obama continues to show double-digit or near double-digit leads in October I think more libertarians and conservatives will think about voting for Barr because he won’t really be a “spoiler” at that point but the vehicle for a protest vote.

But time will tell if you are right on that one.

I do see Obama as the first post-racial candidate, but I tend to see that as a generational thing. Clinton was the first post-WW2 era president; Obama is probably going to be the first post-(classic) Civil Rights-era president.

  17. delawaredem says:

Agree Steve. I think Barr’s support will increase due to McCain’s campaign’ s incompetence. As it becomes clear that McCain has no chance to win, many libertarians and disaffected Republicans will vote Liberatarian or for the Constitution Party.

  18. cassandra m says:

Perhaps Rs will vote for Barr as a protest, but I think that since Barr has to disavow or somehow walk back his support for stuff like the War on Drugs and DOMA and the Patriot Act to reach Libertarians, the Rs who might vote for him just might end up confused.

Agreed that Obama is the first real post-Civil Rights candidate, but he is also post-Women’s Rights and post-Vietnam War, which means that there is a whole lot of 60’s history that he should not have to refight or take ownership of. (And I think is part of his appeal to younger voters.)

  19. Brian says:

Yes Cassandra yes! That is the correct answer.

  20. Steve Newton says:

Ironically, Obama is what Howard Dean wanted to be when he grew up (except maybe not black) 🙂

  21. Truth Teller says:

Look they are afraid of Obama because some jerks think he’s a MUSLIM so why would they vote for Nader he’s an ARAB. Just what are folks from Lebanon called?

  22. cassandra m says:

    Lebanese, last time I looked.

  23. Steve Newton says:

Inordinately lucky, if they are Lebanese living in the US and not in today’s Lebanon….

  24. liberalgeek says:

I don’t care as long as we don’t allow the Lebanese to marry each other… Oh wait…I may be thinking of something else.

  25. cassandra m says:

Well, Nader isn’t married, so maybe there is a secret law or something…if there is one, Bob Barr probably is responsible for it.

  26. Brian says:

I want broadsides from the democratic party of how they will be different? I want a loud and clear message. If you are the party of Jefferson…. the party of change, let us see you fulfill the principles of Jefferson! Bob Barr is closer to these principles than Obama right now. Guys and gals you have to be strong to win…. do not let these fascists from the republican party push you around! Fulfill our declaration… or read it for a start!!!!!!

  27. liberalgeek says:

Brian – one word for you, my friend. “Decaf”

  28. Brian says:

Ok next time decaf…. but come on, let’s see the substance, get to it Democrats!

  29. Truth Teller says:

All my Doctors are Lebanese and so far they have kept me alive much to the schrijn of my enemies. But because they have made my foes upset I really love them. And by the way GEEK they can marry who they want NONE OF MY BUSINESS

  30. pandora says:

“schrijn”? Is that Lebanese for chagrin?
