NCC Stabs Homeowners in the Back

Filed in Delaware by on January 29, 2009

On Tuesday night Mike Matthews was in attendance as county council met.  One of the issues up for debate was the modifications for the workforce housing ordinance.  There were a number of issues that the modifications would address such as removing a traffic study waiver, strengthening the school district notification process, more oversight and a requirement for owner-occupancy.

These are a good start.  However, developers that got in under the wire would be grandfathered.  These will be battled by the SNCCA lawsuit.  If you are a developer that didn’t have your paperwork ready to go when the moratorium was passed, you are in luck.  Everyone else is screwed.

Penrose Hollins decided not to present the modifications for a vote on Tuesday. He said that he didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes, since the legislature has begun legislation that would impact New Castle County development.  Well I call bullshit.  Mr. Hollins doesn’t believe that there is anything wrong with his ordinance in the first place, so he wants Southern New Castle County to be developed just like the rest of the county, as if a developer were given free reign.  And make no mistake, that is exactly what we have here.

This means that the moratorium will be lifted on Monday with no change to the law.  So it is business as usual on February 1st.  And by business as usual, I mean that the developers are back in charge.  Blacktop is the new green.

I second your call. Shenanigans is declared.

  2. Tom S. says:

You could back the Republican in the upcoming special election……

  3. liberalgeek says:

And you know that the Republican is against WFH? When I speak to Lisa Diller, this issue will come up and we will see where she stands on it.

  4. Tom S. says:

WFH was brought to us by the Democratic super majority. County Council members would be more responsive to constituents if they knew there was a chance they wouldn’t get re-elected. If the Republican wins the special election they’ll back down. If a pro-WFH dem just gets replaced by another pro-WFH dem nothing will change.

  5. liberalgeek says:

Yes, because Republicans would never bow to special interests or big business. Thanks for playing. Besides, I don’t actually get to vote, I live in a different district.

  6. Tom S. says:

I’m not saying they don’t, but a Democratic Council member who knows there is a good chance they won’t even face an opponent in the next election, let alone have to fight for their seat has no motivation to resist any special interest.

Competition is a marvelous thing, Delaware needs more of it.

I know Lisa and I know her to be honest, ethical, and have the best interests of the citizens of NCC at heart. This is a commitment to public service on her part. A commitment that reflects years of volunteerism and service to her community. Lisa is exactly the sort of person who should serve on Council.

  8. The WFH law is not needed.

Governments at all levels in Delaware have unused/excess properties which could be granted to exisitng Community Land Trusts for affordable housing near existing services.

There are millions of dollars of land/buildings waiting to be utiliized.

  9. TPN says:

LOL. That’s just what NCC Council needs…another Democrat.

Seriously, the lack of political diversity and competition has made Council’s entrenched players virtually free of any consequences for what they do.

Why should they care? But then again, why should any Republican waste their time running against the Democrat juggernaut that subsumes the entire County government.

I am listening to the podcast of Randy Nelson and Penrose “I don’t listen to you” Hollins excuse his plan through his lying teeth. He has points, but it’s obvious this councilman-at-large has NO CLUE about the county-at-large. So much available inventory within their own-defined range, yet it’s not good enough. WTF?

OH dear…the state is acting with discrimination against NCCo…because they don’t do this with Sussex and Kent. Unbelievable. Well, Mr Hollins…the NCCo Councilman don’t serve the constituents, you all serve YOURSELVES and YOUR *ahem* DONORS!

    Thanks Geek, a lot.

I was looking around on the WNJ web site for their small item about the Hollins move in Wednesday’s newspaper.
It was included in an Around Delaware section. In the interest of sniffing out conspiracies ‘n all….I haven’t been able to locate the Wednesday’s item’s Around Delaware nor the WFH report update anywhere online.
But meanwhile there are a few other, older Around Delaware sections available for linking but nothing from Wednesday.
I wanted to link to it because it was worth noting how badly the issue is being reported to NC Countians. Guess I’ll have to type it by hand from the hard copy.

  12. WFH=Developer Driven Taxpayer’s Disaster. The NJ has not covered anything related to Clark’s wife Pam Scott’s direct influence on WFH language nor have they covered the DIRECT influence developer attorney/real estate industry insiders had on WFH. For the real story on the Clark aided Developer Dissection of the UDC-check out http://www.stayoutofmypocket.com FORUM-“What’s New”-Developer Dismantling of UDC. The legality of this process has to be questioned.

  13. dogdonhunt says:

So there really is more to the story? Having heard the rumors about the Paul Clark connection to rewriting the New Castle County development code-UDC-,it is becoming more clear. Clark and wife Pam Scott and many other development industry insiders have really had a field day rewriting the code to be as developer friendly as they can get away with. Check out Nancy Willing’s post-on http://www.delawareway.com . It links to the WFH opposition site stayoutofmypocket.com and posts some very interesting and informative follow up to Randy Nelson’s DTR post on the Clark/Scott WFH connections. This is going to get interesting.

This is old news. How did Clark re-write it by himself and get all of council to go along just to line his pockets? You don’t have to agree with the policy but get over the conspiracy theories. Even the general assembly decided not to do anything to amend it before taking off for six weeks….
