How does someone like Jamie Moulthrop get the idea that he should run for office?

I mean, he might be a nice guy and all, but if his resume was any thinner it would go from transparent to invisible.

A “Tax preparer for Jackson-Hewitt” means that he takes people’s w-2s and enters them into a software program.

His educational accomplishments include an Associate degree in communications from Harrisburg (Pa.) Area Community College and a semester or two at Penn State University. Hello?

This is just the kind of Republican who depends on party ideology who grows up to be a despicable Tom Delay or a loathsome Charlie Copeland.

Has anyone seen the mailing that he sent out? We heard from callers on Sunday that the mailing he sent out was “terrible,” so I’m wondering what was in it.

Your supporting arguments may be a slippery slope complaint. You’ll end up grabbing more people in that than I think you intend. Plus, it just tells many people that they have no right to ever run for office.

  3. Unstable Isotope says:

I think anyone should be able to run for office. You can’t have a resume until you’ve actually served, right?

  4. Rebecca says:

I’m also told that Mr. M didn’t bother to register to vote until two years ago. Now that’s the sort of citizenship I look for in an elected official.

  5. jason330 says:

I wouldn’t have the nerve to run with that resume. That is my point.

  6. John Feroce says:

Typical attack on a person’s occupation and education I’ve come to expect from you. Are you now setting standards? I’d love for you to roll out every Democratic elected official’s background in those two areas.

And this from the local Dems that just gave us a GED Gov? Are you kidding me?

He’s running for a local office and it seems to me he’s fully qualified and deserves credit for entering the arena.

Voters will decide if they find his platform, demeanor, background, etc to be what they are looking for.

I learned a long time ago that a person’s life experiences are of lot more value than one’s educational background. Look at where all these MBA’s got us.

The fact he’s not an elitist might actually be a good thing, “I feel your pain” kind of guy is just what we need.

  7. RSmitty says:

“I feel your pain” kind of guy is just what we need.

In that case, I announce that I will be primarying Christine O’Donnell for the 2010 Senate Race. If nothing else, I feel all your pain!!!

    Dang, I am a shoo-in!

  8. John Feroce says:

“In that case, I announce that I will be primarying Christine O’Donnell for the 2010 Senate Race. If nothing else, I feel all your pain!!!”

Just don’t ask me for money 🙂

  9. John Feroce says:

He sounds like the kind of down to earth person we should welcome on the council.

“Moulthrop, 41, and his wife, Kathy, live in Old Post Farm with their children, Evan, 9, and Grace, 5. Moulthrop began his professional career with MBNA, and then transitioned to the non-profit sector where he managed a loan program for low-income working families at a Wilmington-based non-profit agency. Today he works as a tax preparer and is a stay-at-home dad. Active in the community, Moulthrop has been a leader with Freedom Trail District Scout Troop 283 and Cub Scout Pack 444 for over a decade. Moulthrop is also an Eagle Scout.”

    From his site –
“I would be honored to have your support on February 19 to serve as your County Councilman. New Castle County faces some difficult financial decisions in the years and months to come. Our economy is in recession and the County will need to make some tough budget choices over the coming years. I believe that my financial background will be a real asset on County Council.

My wife and I work hard to meet our family’s budget, just like you do. We take a hard look at every dollar we spend as a family. In this tough economy, that’s the same approach that our county government needs to take. We can be more creative; we can save taxpayer’s money and still provide the services we rely on.

I’ll be an independent voice for the taxpayers of the 5th district, looking out for New Castle County’s bottom line. I hope you agree, and I hope I can count on your support!

    Sincerely,

    Jamie Moulthrop “

  10. Possibly he could have been a community organizer and then have a two year Senate Career with no accomplishments at all and then be President?

  11. liberalgeek says:

Or a pilot. That would be great.

  12. h. says:

If there was a -D after his name it wouldn’t be mentioned.

  13. anon2700 leaving now says:

Ooohboy. Talk about a stupid post. This takes the cake over anything Feroce could ever have written.

Any work is honorable. Any education is to the better. To ridicule both is asinine.

    Leaving now.

  14. Suzanne says:

I am sure we have quite a few high school drop outs in the legislature. I know we have farmers. So what is wrong with a Associates in communication? We have an IC with an associates degree in fashion – so hey — why not? Obviously people elect you no matter what.
Anybody can run – no matter what their background. Doesn’t mean that I believe their education makes them suitable for the job, but I’d rather take a person without a Bachelors or Masters degree that has street smarts, then some idiot that only knows the theory of things and not the reality.

I won’t judge him for running until I see if he is competent or incompetent.

  15. anony says:

If Moulthrop is elected, his education level will exceed that of many of the current Council members.

  16. 3rd Rep District says:

Did you look at Helene Keeley’s
    Curia Vitae?

    Hospitality school? No College?

    Or her husband the dork?

  17. nemski says:

I’m in agreement with Feroce with this one. Kind of a silly post, sorry Jason.

  18. AnonSeventeen says:

I’m a Democrat but Jason, this post was a little unfair… I don’t think you’re serving the purpose with this kind of stuff.

  19. Gabriel says:

Leave the guy alone and let him run for whatever office he wants to run for. He’s getting picked on because he’s a Republican, and he’s hardly the first one with scant education.

Ruth Ann Minner was the trailblazer. She had a GED and look where it got her. KWS got elected. The uneducated are all over the place in politics because they can’t get hired in the private sector for the money they think they deserve. Better than flipping burgers at McDonalds or working at Lowe’s. All it takes to get elected is enough money, a certain disregard for the truth, decent presence, and a good spokesperson/organizer. Voters couldn’t care less about the issues or what the candidate will or won’t do once in office.

  20. jason330 says:

    Nemski,

It is impossible to imagine Feroce describing a Democrat with the same lackluster credentials as a “I feel your pain- kind of guy”.

  21. nemski says:

    Jason,

I tired of the argument, “Yeah, but he did it first.” We should be better than that.

  22. Dorian Gray says:

The guy’s CV is weak, fine. I wouldn’t vote for a Rep or Dem with this resume but that’s for the voters to decide. Washington was a farmer turned militia vigilante who married into a wealthy family… he did OK.

  23. jason330 says:

Well take Feroce out of it then. Do you think this guy has a resume that says, “I should be in elected office.” ?

I don’t. If you do, we have an honest difference of opinion and you should be better than attacking me for expressing my opinion.

    So there.

  24. jason330 says:

….and another thing. I’m tirted too. I’m tired of these lackluster Republican intellects gettng their start in local politics and riding empty anti-American talking points to positions of power.

    So there.

  25. Tom S. says:

“If there was a -D after his name it wouldn’t be mentioned.”

Good call. Hey Dems – besides having a D next to her name what qualifications does your candidate have that would make her a good county councilor?

  26. Dorian Gray says:

Ah, Thomas, you may not want to go there. Diller is the opponent yes… from the website.

Lisa’s experience with both nonprofit organizations and government agencies gives her management experience and an understanding of the importance of constituent services. She most recently served as the administrator for the State of Delaware’s Office of Volunteerism where she managed a multi-million dollar budget. She also holds a Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary and teaches at several local colleges.

On this score it’s NO CONTEST.

  27. Tom S. says:

    Not so fast my friend…

Jamie, 41, began his professional career at MBNA before transitioning to the non-profit sector. There, he managed a loan program for low-income working families at a Wilmington-based non-profit agency. Today Jamie works as a tax preparer and is a stay-at-home dad.

Active in the community, Jamie is an Eagle Scout, and has been involved with the Freedom Trail District Scouts for over a decade. He has been a leader in Scout Troop 283 and Cub Scout Pack 444.

They pretty well level off on the “We’re nice people who have done nice things” category.

BTW, several local colleges? How many do we have?

  28. Dorian Gray says:

Dude, it ain’t even close. Give me a fucking break. MBNA, tax prep and the cub scouts… I’m underwhelmed. Princeton Seminary is heavy hitters my man. Bart Erhman, Bruce Metzger, etc…

Look I have no beef with the guy. I said it was for voters to decide. But on the CV alone it is no contest. That’s a fact not an opinion.

And we have many local colleges. Wesley, Goldey Beacom, Wilmington, Widener, Del Tech, Del State, U of D… that’s “several” yes

  29. Tom S. says:

Along with the cub scouts and the boy scout he managed a loan program for low-income working families at a Wilmington-based non-profit agency. I hold that in higher regard than being about to balance a non-profit budget.

  30. Dorian Gray says:

I won’t dispute that one. That’s a nice item, sure. But top to bottom it is no contest ‘on paper’. But the election will tell.

  31. Tom S. says:

    Indeed they shall

  32. “…Active in the community, Jamie is an Eagle Scout, and has been involved with the Freedom Trail District Scouts for over a decade. He has been a leader in Scout Troop 283 and Cub Scout Pack 444….”

And how is his membership in one of the most antigay organisations supposed to convince me? Raising little bigots is good how?

  33. goneaway says:

    Suzanne,

There are some people working inside the Scouts to change the policies. Google “Scouting For All.” I don’t know if that’s this guy’s case – kinda doubt it – but don’t condemn everyone.
