The Pawlenty Pardon

Filed in National by on May 24, 2011

I don’t like ill-considered pardons being used against Governors turned Presidential candidates. A small possibility of clemency built into the machinery of our modern prison industrial complex is not a bad thing. If every Governor feels that they may be haunted by the future acts of someone who seemed deserving of mercy, I see the possibility of clemency evaporating.

But this Pawlenty Pardon – with the wiping clean of the sex offender record – seems like it could be damaging.

Because a grown man marries the 14-year-old girl he rapes, that was grounds for a pardon? Talk about bad judgment. Geez, turning down that pardon was a no brainer.

  2. Dana Garrett says:

OK, here’s my superficial take on Pawlenty’s prospects to become Prez. It will never happen because he has a weak chin. I don’t think voters will go for someone as Prez who has a weak chin.

  3. jason330 says:

The 14 year old girl was justly punished for her wonton behavior with marriage, so there was no need to punish the man. That’s text book Republican logic at work.

  4. Prup (aka Jim Benton) says:

Actually, if you follow the links, it was much worse than that. The man Pawlenty pardoned — and it wasn;’t just a ‘get-out-of-jail’ pardon but an expunging of his record as a serial child molester — because he married the 14 year old he slept with — was done, as the letter the molester wrote specifically stated — was so that he could ‘continue to coach his son’s Little League Team, get contracts with state agencies, and so his wife could open a child-care center in their home. (Apparently she already had opened one next door.)

I’m relatively sure it’s stupidity and carelessness, not evil or corruption, but this one gonna hurt!

  5. jason330 says:

Yes. I would not expect someone like Sarah Palin to shy away from using it.

  6. Delaware Dem says:

I am telling you guys, Sarah Palin will be the nominee. It is amazing how everything is falling into place.

  7. Delaware Dem says:

Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen.

  8. anon says:

    The Palinocalypse is coming!

Palin as nominee would make her VP choice very interesting. If you see her start to meet with black Republican men, that will be the tipoff.

  9. Miscreant says:

I guess it varies by state, but no expungements with pardons in Delaware, at least for felonies. One time I stopped a guy for suspicious behavior, and ran his criminal history. I thought I hit the jackpot. At the bottom of the seventh page of mostly felony drug arrests and convictions, there was a notation “Pardoned by Governor”. He served his time, got pardoned, but no “wiping clean” of records.

He’s a successful contractor/developer now, but he still has a pantsload of criminal history.

  10. jason330 says:

Urqhart? Please make it be true.

Re Palin VP pick, it would have to be the stupidest most transparently craven and patriotically cloying choice possible – I’m going with Toby Keith or Larry the Cable Guy.

  11. jpconnorjr says:

Miscreant: You are correct in DE Pardon meanns forgiveness not that the events are forgotten. Makes good sense actually.

  12. skippertee says:

Jerkhart would have never survived his first deal for major weight.
They would have seen him for what he is, a JERK and pumped him full of lead.
But then we would have never had our tete a tete on Market.
Dear JERKY BOY, how I miss him…..I hardly knew ye.

  13. skippertee says:

Having had it done myself, misdemeanors can be EXPUNGED and the slate wiped clean.
I had it done in case I ran for public office…..HAHAHAHA
Just imagine THAT for a moment.

  14. jpconnorjr says:

Felonies can not they can only be pardoned

  15. Delaware Dem says:

No no. She can’t afford to displease the white racist vote.

    It’s Palin-Bachmann.

  16. anon says:

Guiliani told a crowd in NY last night, he may run for President. Hasnt that dunce got the message! Several articles on the net about Pawlenty said, the “man was a sex pedophile, and his entire record was expunged”, that should go over big with those non family value folk.

  17. jason330 says:

I just read that Guiliani is planning to outflank Mitt with an all out New Hampshire onslaught. That should be fun to watch.

The bettors at Intrade have the GOP nominee race as follows:
    Mitt Romney at 28.5%
    Pawlenty at 24.3%
    Huntsman at 15.8%
    Bachman at 6%
    Cain at 5.8%
    Palin at 5.6%
    Newt 2.7%
    Paul 2.4%
    Santorum 0.8%
    Johnson at 0.6%

Obama to be re-elected at 61.2%

  18. jason330 says:

BTW – bettors are going big for Scotty McCreery to win American Idol Season 10

Last prediction was: $8.40 / share

I visited intrade to check the political futures market. I guess it is officially election season.

  19. anon says:

    It’s Palin-Bachmann.

    LOL… scorpions in a bottle.

  20. Jason330 says:

If DelDem really thinks Palin is going to win it, he should buy up some Palin contracts. For five and a half cents he can buy contracts that will pay $1.00 if he is right.

  21. If you read the whole story, the guy that was pardoned for marrying the teenager he raped molested his own daughter for more than 6 years.
