Republicans don’t like the looks of this…

Let’s see, do I have this right? …

Presidential candidate is an unpopular, secretive douche nozzle who cheats on his taxes and ties dogs to car luggage racks? [Check!]

Social welfare policies are hated by Americans, especially seniors that vote in disproportionate numbers? [Check!]

Have given up on “family values” in favor of “fetus values” in apparent attempt to turn away votes from all women? [Check!]

Continued slavish devotion to utterly failed, and transparently fraudulent “tax cuts for the wealthy create jobs” economic policies? [Check!]

So where does this leave us?

Homegrown Terrorists Caught in a Plot to Assassinate President Obama

Filed in National by on August 27, 2012 8 Comments

…. in addition to planning and carrying out lots of other mayhem. I haven’t heard this on the news, but saw it online. Information still seems to be coming in, but the short story is that Army soldiers at Ft. Stewart in Georgia bought about $87K in guns and bomb-making materials, killed two people who looked like they were going to talk about the group and were working out a plan to overthrow the government and assassinate President Obama.

This made the first page of Reddit:
On Tuesday night, small business owner Sher Valenzuela will address the nation at the RNC on how she “built it herself”. Unfortunately, she forgot to build www.firststatemanufacturing.com. So, I built it for her! (firststatemanufacturing.com)

GOP’s platform gets specific on privatizing Medicare

Filed in National by on August 27, 2012 6 Comments

In a leaked party platform circulating on the eve of their convention, Republicans reveal in candid detail how they intend to upend Medicare.

The platform, snagged by Politico on Friday night after the Republican National Committee accidentally posted it to its website before taking it down, is scheduled to be approved at the convention early this week.

The text details the privatization policy that GOP lawmakers have supported for years, and that Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are selling as necessary to “save” Medicare. But in an unusual twist, it addresses the specific aspect of the proposal that makes it a departure from what Americans know as “Medicare.”

Progressive Dems offer their 2012 Endorsements

The Progressive Democrats for Delaware (“PDD”) is a grassroots organization that was founded in 2004 by local progressive and liberal Democrats and like minded unaffiliated voters, seeking both the advancement and preservation of progressive policies in Delaware and across the nation. We seek to strengthen the Democratic Party so that it, and we, fight for the most basic progressive principles, such as equal rights for all in all things, single payer universal healthcare, opposing austerity (for the poor and middle class should not have to pay for the mistakes of the rich and powerful), worker’s rights (including the right to unionize and participate in collective bargaining with their employers, whether they be public or private), fair and progressive taxation (including making sure wealthy citizens and corporations start paying their fair share in taxes), open government and the preservation and strengthening of the social safety net (most importantly Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid). Check inside for their endorsements.

Monday Open Thread [8.27.12]

Filed in Open Thread by on August 27, 2012 22 Comments

With Isaac headed toward New Orleans, Republican National Convention officials are considering a number of worst-case scenarios including a quick roll call and a truncated speech by Mitt Romney, National Journal reports.

“Officials conceded on the record for the first time Monday that plans for an already shortened three-day convention were in doubt… A senior GOP official said no decision had been made and none was likely Monday, but said the convention conceivably could be as short as a single day.”

Other reports suggested the convention could be cancelled entirely. I’d imagine the Democratic convention, also already shortened to three days due to the Labor Day Weekend, may also take a hit if the damage from the storm is bad. And if that occurs, I wonder if we have already seen the last political convention ever…

Chris Matthews Calls Out Reince Priebus

Filed in National by on August 27, 2012 9 Comments

I normally don’t watch Morning Joe because Joe and Mika drive me nuts.  However, I had it on this morning and watched Chris Matthews give Reince Priebus a spanking.

The MSNBC host criticized Romney’s birther joke, his consistant claims that Obama is a foreigner, and argued that the campaign has sought to foreignize the president. Priebus defended the party by claiming that Obama’s health and economic policies are European, but Matthews quickly dismissed the claim.

Check inside for the video and transcript.

Tough Campaign Messaging

Tough Campaign Messaging

Am looking for alot of opinions from DL readers on this one. The sticker shown below is from the Alex Pires campaign and was on the Sunday NJ as delivered (I think delivered) to one of our favorite commenters yesterday. Since this individual knows that some of us do not see the dead tree version of the paper, this was sent in to share. I’m not sure if this was on all of the papers statewide, but take a look and tell us if you think this is effective or not:

Late Night Video 2: We Built This City On Public Dough (Rachel Schain & Todd Chappelle)

Using the parody lyrics to Starship’s “We Built This City (On Rock’N’Roll)” I wrote on last Friday’s thread on the RNC’s ‘We Built This’ theme, Delaware musicians Rachel Schain and Todd Chappelle recorded the following video:
