Governor Markell Declares (Limited) State Of Emergency

Filed in Delaware, National by on October 27, 2012

I will update as more info comes in.

Via WDEL:

Governor Markell orders a mandatory evacuation of coastal areas in all three counties in Delaware as the state prepares for a major hit from Hurricane Sandy.

The evacuation order begins at 8pm Saturday, giving residents 24 hours to get out of the storm’s path. All evacuations should be completed by 8pm Sunday. The state expected 50,000 people to be fleeing coastal areas. [emphasis mine]

This is shaping up to be a nasty storm.  Everyone be careful out there.

Hmm… Governor stresses the word “limited.”  Everyone got that?  Which I guess means you can still drive and businesses can remain open.

Bay communities will almost certainly be cut off and emergency crews won’t be able to get there, Markell warns #StormDE #SandyDE

just talked to my neighbor who works for Delmarva. He is on call all week starting tomorrow. He said at 45 mph sustained wind, they stop working as it becomes dangerous for them. So, yeah as far as power, we’re on our own. I just finished filling gallon zip lock bags of ice. What else are people doing to get ready?

  3. Pencadermom says:

    besides stocking wine 🙂

  4. Whole house generator w/ lots of fuel. Plenty of food & a full 1.75L of good bourbon. I’m good to go for a few days.

  5. JTF says:

Ya’ll are making me concerned about my lack of booze.

  6. Delaware Dem says:

I have plenty of beer, but not pumpkin flavored beer, and I will require more gin and tonics. So a trip is planned for tommorrow

JTF, you still have time to stock up. There is plenty of booze at my house and am getting ready to start a pot of white bean chili. Warming up with a martini as we speak.

(Aside, yesterday I went to a whiskey tasting event and discovered an amazing thing. Vermouth has a pretty short shelf life. We had a gin martini that was simply amazing. Bartender attributed it to the fresh vermouth. Seems like the stuff has a shelf life of a week opened or a month opened and in your fridge.)

Got my DFH Pumpkin Ale, plenty of wine. Bought water, a roast for the crock pot tomorrow. Oh, got Grand Marnier for my Creme Broulee French toast.
Charging up cell phone, tablet. If power goes out, there goes phone, internet, cable. Can still use cell phone or tab as hot spot, laptop has 8 – 10 hr. battery life. Also have a regular plug converter for the car that I can recharge the laptop if I have to plus car charges for phone & tab.

And… tied down deck furniture. Oh my, guess I’ve been busy!!!

I brought in enough dry firewood to take the chill off those three or so days without power next week (we are all-electric). Also a bottle of Whistlepig Rye, plus plenty of random house-gift wine which mostly seems to be red.

No alcohol here but plenty of diet coke, water and iced coffee in case the power goes out. Brought my autistic son home for the storm so entertainment is watching him pace around 🙂

  11. pandora says:

Luckily, we had the chimney swept two weeks ago and a cord of firewood delivered this week. Of course, I have to go out tomorrow. How did I forget dog food?

plenty of water, considering boarding windows because of a huge dead tree…. within striking distance. Colman stove, lots of canned soup, emergency radio and restocked first aid kit….. im gonna hold off on this lovely bottle of vodka until after it has passed. Then, after a damage report… game on. Be safe everyone.

  13. puck says:

With all this alcohol, it is entirely possible we simply won’t remember the storm.

So verizon sends me this nice email warning that power outages may make my High Speed Internet (their caps) unavailable. If I want to check the status of my internet I should check their webpage.

    Hmmm.

Am I the only one around here who eats fruits and vegetables?
Don’t need to cook ’em or refrigerate ’em.

  16. puck says:

We just went apple picking and have bags of ’em. Veggies we always have, from Newark Farmers Market. I’ve also got plenty of propane and charcoal.

    Wine is a fruit.

  18. kavips says:

Deldem if you find pumpkin beer, buy it, let everyone know how much is left. It stops getting made in September, it being seasonal, and I believe all warehouses are now out…. The winter beers are on their way….

  19. Paula says:

LOL, Pandora, indeed. I meant to say fresh fruit.

Believe it or not, we are on our way to a funeral/wake, then off to pick up dog food. THEN… we will be opening the wine and lighting a fire and settling in.

My parents are (finally) evacuating from Fenwick Island – the water in the canal topped the bulkhead at 9am. Rt 1 is closed between Dewey and Bethany. Deldot livecam is pretty impressive.
