Song of the Day 6/30: Elton John and Taron Egerton, “Your Song”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on June 30, 2019

“Rocketman,” the Elton John biopic/fantasy/jukebox musical, has generated only about one-tenth the box office, and even less of the buzz, of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but it has exceeded analyst expectations and is already in the black. One of the selling points in the film’s marketing was that star Taron Egerton sang all his own vocals; here he is joining Elton on stage in Hove, England, three weeks ago. My judgment is that he sings pretty well for an actor, but his timbre is different from Elton’s. See what you think. The clip is notable to me because it demonstrates that Elton John is now performing in his bathrobe.

For comparison, here’s the young Elton John performing “Your Song” live on Top of the Pops in 1971.

Back then he work a proper jacket, with almost as many sequins and rhinestones as he now wears on his bathrobe.

Great movie. At the end I had to apologize to my son for depriving him of the opportnuty to be an international superstar by not being a horrible, unloving parent.
