Democratic Debate 2 – Day 2 Results

This night was a little more fight oriented, but there was still a lot to like about the Democratic candidates. The moderators sucked again. (“Can you guarantee raising taxes won’t hurt the economy?” that was an actual question) All GOP frames all the time. Here is my take on the winners and losers:

Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet He is only included on the strength os one viral anti-Trump video. Under the bright lights, he is nothing more than terrible centrism defended poorly. Drop out already.

Former Vice President Joe Biden Joe actually did a pretty good job. despite the fact that Bill de Blasio tried to make a cottage industry out of attacking, him.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio When he wasn’t trying to be the guy who broke Biden, he had some great thing to say. He screwed up his priorities so badly even Joe Biden commented on it.

New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker Like de Blasio, Booker saw beating up Joe as a way to be internet famous tomorrow. Again, it is a shame because he makes a great case when he isn’t pandering to Twitter.

Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro I like Castro. He didn’t get very much traction tonight though.

Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard She had it out for Harris in the way de Blasio had it out for Biden, Maybe it was all factual, but not a great look. Good ads during breaks.

New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand As much as I don’t like her she got in a good jab at Trump, and I love jabs at Trump.

California Sen. Kamala Harris Her attacks on Biden didn’t seem as strident or forced as de Blasio and Booker’s attacks. She is about to be a front runner and has the countenance of someone who is a front runner.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee He won.

Businessman Andrew Yang I want to hear more about his guaranteed income plans.

Things that only exist in the fantasy world of Democratic Centrists:

Things that only exist in the fantasy world of Democratic Centrists:

For all their talk about being “realistic” and “pragmatic” the Democratic centrists (represented on the stage last night by John Delaney), appear to hold a few fantastical beliefs on par with believing in Santa Claus and trickle-down economics. So here is my list of things that only exist in the fantasy world of Democratic Centrists:

1) Persuadable Trump voters
2) People who absolutely LOVE their company health insurance

I’ll be adding to this list as centrist continue to expose themselves as looney crackpots.

Song of the Day 7/31: Frank Sinatra (Joe Piscopo) and Stevie Wonder (Eddie Murphy), “Ebony and Ivory”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on July 31, 2019 0 Comments

This SNL skit dates to 1982, when Ronald Reagan was president. Would he have been elected if the “African monkeys” tape had been released to the public? Given what we know about the GOP, I’m guessing yes.

‘Bulo’s Fave Tunes: July 2019

Filed in Arts and Entertainment, Featured by on July 31, 2019 2 Comments

I’ve discovered so many great tunes this year that I don’t know how I can shoehorn the best into a mere Top 50 at year’s end. Top 100, maybe? Talk me down. But only after you’ve listened to this month’s trove of musical treasures:

Our Malicious Media – George McGovern Proves that Progressives Can’t Win

George McGovern was mentioned on CNN’s post-debate show. The Democratic Party presidential nominee in 1972 was liberal. He lost badly. It was 1972. Centrists Mike Dukakis, Al Gore, John Kerry, Hilary Clinton all lost but somehow it is 1972 that is instructive.

I’m a News-Journal subscriber. Some times, many times, in fact, I’ve asked myself why.  But there’s a brilliant piece, the kickoff piece of reporting, by Xerxes Wilson, in today’s paper about the inequities of how property taxes are assessed in Delaware. It’s subscriber-only, and worth getting a subscription for. A brief excerpt may whet your […]

Debate 2 – Day 1 Results

It may sound pollyannish of me to say, but I think everyone (except Klobuchar) did a pretty good job. Oh, the moderators were terrible. Why can’t anyone ask a question that isn’t a reworded GOP talking point?

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock Helped himself. A younger better Biden.

Comment Rescue – Who’s not paying their fair share?

Filed in National by on July 30, 2019 1 Comment

A recent News Journal article by Karl Baker exposes a serious problem exacerbating the insufficient funding issues for Christina public schools. This well-done investigative piece should initiate some type of response and action by authorities in collecting outstanding property tax arrearages or cause them to place a lien against the property owners or businesses. As […]

Song of the Day 7/30: Five Americans, “Western Union”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on July 30, 2019 8 Comments

Technological progress has rendered some old songs obsolete — “Please Mr. Postman” and “The Letter,” for example, are set in an era when people still used snail mail to communicate with each other. Or consider telephone songs, especially ones in which the singer talks to an operator, like “Memphis, Tennessee” — most people haven’t spoken […]

A 6-Year-Old Boy Dies Because Some White Supremacist Was Really Angry

Filed in National by on July 29, 2019 6 Comments

This is the price of the 2nd Amendment: A 19-year-old kid in California got ahold of a military-style rifle, cut a fence to elude security and shot 15 people before he was shot dead by police. Among the three people killed was 6-year-old boy whose mother was also shot, but survived. After the shooting started, […]

Song of the Day 7/29: 10cc, “Oh Effendi”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on July 29, 2019 0 Comments

This was written in the wake of the first Arab oil embargo, but it’s remarkable how little the geopolitics of the Middle East have changed in decades since. The only big difference is that we no longer have to use gun-runners to sell weapons to sheiks and mullahs — we do it right out in […]

Highlands Bunker – BONUS EPISODE – The Streets of Puerto Rico

Ed Note: This report on the power of regular people to make change is extremely timely, so this bonus episode has been unlocked for supporters and non-supporters alike.  REV says it all the time half in jest, but I add my voice here in all earnestness: Consider becoming a patron, there is a tier for every clear thinking person who has ever lurked or commented here.

A few bunker updates as well as the first-ever Skype interview from the bunker. Maria Beauchamp calls in from the massive strike in Puerto Rico just hours before the governor resigned. The audio is a bit rough for the first section, but it gets easier to hear later on.

Show Notes:
