Delaware Political Weekly: Feb. 21-27, 2020
1. Mayor Mike Announces Reelection Run. Read all about it in this WDEL interview. The gentrification of Wilmington is well under way. Given four more years, he and Buccini/Pollin will likely have succeeded in relegating those not championed by the Chamber to the margins. Nobody of any stature appears inclined to challenge him, though. I think that’s unfortunate.
2. Nathan Field Files In Wilmington City Council District 8. This is of note because Field has been involved with Town Square Delaware and is a founder of the Wilmington Historical Society. He works for Eastern Highway Specialists, which is a ‘regional bridge and highway construction firm’. Hmmm, the incumbent in this district is Bud Freel who, of course, is a long-standing DELDOT employee. There is no way that he has not crossed paths with Field. Is Freel retiring, running At-Large, or just facing a primary challenge? Of the three choices, I consider the third to be the least likely. Could Field be Freel’s anointed successor?
3. Party Change For Presidential Primary Deadline Is Today. From the Department Of Elections:
You must be registered with the Democratic or Republican Party to vote in Delaware’s Presidential Primary Election. You must be registered as a Democrat to vote in the Democratic Primary, or as a Republican to vote in the Republican Primary. The deadline to change your party affiliation before Delaware’s 2020 Presidential Primary Election is Friday, February 28, 2020.
That’s by 4:30 today.
4. Filings. State Rep. Lyndon Yearick (R-34th RD); Sara Jo Cox (R Candidate-Kent County Clerk Of the Peace).
That’s all I’ve got today. What’d I miss, and whaddayathink?

Solidarity with IAFF 1590. Couldn’t make it yesterday, but we see you brothers & sisters.
I know it’s popular to blame Buccini/Pollin for Mayor Mike, but the banks had at least as much, and probably more, to do with prodding him to run for the office. I know of at least one bank that told him they’d pull jobs from the city if he didn’t run.
Yeah, no doubt. It’s a combination of heinous players in the late stage capitalism game. BPG gets a lot of blame, but not all the blame.
Bud Freel announced his retirement this week, I believe.
Thanks, must’ve missed that. I even googled him and didn’t find it.
