Comment Rescue: The Case for BHL

Filed in Delaware by on October 17, 2023

Found this in the trash folder. From “Deeds,” whose comment ended up there because he or she used more than one screen name. I have consistently asked for someone to make the case for why BHL should be governor. This weak sauce is what the answer is:

“Let me answer Alby aka the fat guy with a wfp t shirt who never got where he wanted in life so he’s angry…or that’s how I imagine it.”

You have a lousy imagination. I lost the weight years ago, I live in Paris and I have never belonged to or supported the Working Families Party. Try again, loser.

“BHL has been LTG for the last 8 years. She’s familiar with how to e executor branch of government works.”

Lieutenant governor is a part-time job and has no actual connection with the governorship. She has no better idea of how the executive branch works than any other observer. Besides, she’s served beneath one of the weakest governors this state has ever had.

“Prior to being elected LTG over many in a jungle type primary she was a state senator for many years so she understands how the legislative body works.”

Yes, we can see that. It works as a self-enrichment scheme.

“She’s a nurse with a real life story who actually lived somewhere else than this 2 hour area we call Delaware. I find that an asset.”

I don’t. Every person who’s ever held a job in Delaware or lived in another state meets these qualifications. Next.

“She was a military wife and be familiar with how to be the commander in chief for the Delaware guard.”

I consider military service a minus, not a plus. And we can all judge what a quality spouse she has.

“She doesn’t live in Wilmington (and actually knows the rest of the state!)”

Fewer than 70,000 people live in Wilmington.

“She’s a nurse and been a professor for many young women trying to become a nurse.”

So what? Not a qualification for governor.

“She took a specialized role in to trying to stop the opioid crisis in this state.”

So what? I don’t consider stopping people from poisoning themselves the government’s job.

“She’s not some rich Dooshbag lawyer who spent 100k to of his own money to become county executive and then cut sleazy deals with developed the last 8 years.”

What, Dana couldn’t scrape up that much with his Section 8 housing?

“What I miss”

Just about everything. All this adds up to is “I don’t like Matt Meyer but I’ve hitched my star to this talentless woman with the jerkoff husband.” This was my point. She has done nothing to deserve this job, and shown plenty of reasons why she shouldn’t have it.

Happy now, asshole?

This argument is more comprehensive than the one presented by Bethany, “It is my turn.”

    • It will be interesting to see what Carney does. Yes, he endorsed her. Yes, he can’t stand Matt Meyer.

But for all his dim-bulbyness, I see him as an ethical person. Will he stick by her, will he sit it out, or will he try to find someone to take her place on the ticket?

      • Alby says:

To be clear, I am no fan of Meyer. He’s a favorite of those who consider themselves reasonable Republicans, the Chamber types (there are loads of Chamber Democrats, too).

But BHL is not telling me anything to contradict Meyer’s pro-business, pro-development agenda, I suspect because she supports the same things.

So at this point the choice is between two pro-Chamber Democrats.

One has the experience of running the state’s second-largest government, so advantage Meyer there.

The other has a shady spouse whose bad behavior has gotten the candidate in trouble once and apparently has again. The candidate’s secretive response and public lack thereof casts further doubt on her judgment. So disadvantage BHL there.

She wanted to skate to Woodburn. Nah gonna happen. You want the job? Convince me you deserve it. The above CV is the program for a skating routine.

      • Big Woop says:

You consider Carney ethical? The same guy that held his nose to let the weed bills pass.

Thanks, John, for no longer criminalizing your neighbors, big woop.

        • My disdain for Carney is well-established. He is a bureaucrat-turned-governor.

Don’t see him as crooked, though. Although–if he actually runs for Mayor of Wilmington due to what appears to be a bullshit inside deal, my opinion will change. Fast.

Would BHL be any less a mediocrity than, say Tom Carper?

    • Carper was the first Corporadem Governor. I think most Delaware D voters have tired of Corporadems. Problem is, it’s more likely than not that both BHL and Meyer are Corporadems. In recent history, the only governor you could argue was NOT a Corporadem was Minner.

Markell campaigned as if he wouldn’t be a Corporadem. He, um, wasn’t telling the truth.

    • Alby says:

I’d wager no, and have little doubt Meyer would be either. Doesn’t mean I have to settle for it quietly.

  3. deeds says:

Alby points to Meyer’s experience as CE but hand waives BHL’s last 20 years of State government service in the Legislative and Executive branches. Tells me all I need to know about the bias.

You seem weirdly obessesed with her husband. If I judged all my friends by their spouses or marriages I wouldn’t have many friends.

  4. Alby says:

Legislative branch experience is by definition not executive branch. And in the executive branch there’s one executive, and it’s not her. She now has what is by definition a part-time job.

I’m not denying her experience, though I see nothing especially distinguished about it. Weighed against having responsibility for the state’s second-largest government, I think it comes up short. Hence advantage Meyer.

I’m not judging her by her husband. I’m not judging her at all. I score it as a mark against her because I foresee trouble in letting a guy who’s shown himself to, in the parlance of our times, have problems with boundaries near the governor’s office. He needs a real job somewhere, if anyone would take him. I hear Amazon’s hiring.

Before any of this came up I was unimpressed with her CV – they’ve groomed her to be governor. The last person I heard an insider say that about was John Carney. Eight more years of Carney policies? No thanks.

Meyer has his own problems. You don’t run NCCo without making enemies and alienating constituents, so he’s got an uphill battle. As the insider-backed candidate, she still would have to be considered the favorite.

It would be nice for voters if someone with actual ideas entered the race.

Also, why do all your friends marry the wrong people?

  5. Will says:

The more you meet people who support BHL, the more you wonder about the kind of people she keeps company with.
