Song of the Day 4/23: Jon Bon Jovi, “Do What You Can”

Filed in Arts and Entertainment by on April 23, 2020

New Jersey has been one of the states hardest-hit by the coronavirus, and last night a bunch of stars with New Jersey ties threw a benefit “Jersey 4 Jersey” concert via livestream, headlined by Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi, who wrote a song about the pandemic for the occasion.

Singer-songwriter Charlie Puth sang “Growing Up,” fittingly, from his bedroom at his parents’ home in Rumson. In its review of the show, Rolling Stone ranked the performances in order of New Jerseyness and proclaimed Puth the “surprise winner.”

Sitting in your childhood bedroom at age 28, wearing a tank top and several gold necklaces while covering a track from Bruce Springsteen’s debut album on a MIDI keyboard? All of that is undeniably more Jersey than actually being Springsteen or Jon Bon Jovi.

I was really hoping that they’d have John Gorka on the show to do his song “I’m from New Jersey.”

    “I’m from New jersey
    I don’t expect too much
    If the world ended today
    I would adjust”

      Not famous enough, I guess.

I’ve been watching a lot of rockers doing these solo-from-the-living-room concerts, and while they’re pleasant enough, it would be nice to hear more folkies who are more accustomed to playing alone with their guitar.

The #cancelled Ryan Adams, who has been playing alone for over a year (and probably always will) is taking requests for acoustic covers, mostly well-known songs from the 80s – Cyndi Lauper, Tears for Fears, Ozzy, etc. Some good and some not so good, but that’s the nature of taking requests. And he already had the bedhead thing down. He is in fine voice and his guitar is still fantastic. Still waiting for the outcome of a supposed FBI investigation into sexting an underage girl.

Not being familiar with Puth I watched him play on the event earlier in the week and didn’t really like his song. This one is serving to redeem that first impression.

And he made his bed this time….https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/fans-amused-confused-by-charlie-puths-unmade-bed-on-one-world-together-at-home-livestream-213815346.html

I had never heard of him before this. He’s apparently been slagged pretty heavily by critics, but like a lot of modern singers he got his start releasing his own stuff on YouTube, so it’s not as if he’s a record company creation.

He’s got a sweet voice and he gets my vote for making the bed! (Or maybe his mom made it…)

How many of you watched this because you thought Jeopardy would be on?
